How Your Pledge Class Functions Like A Family

With recruitment still a near memory, your pledge class probably hasn't had more than a month or so to really 'bond.' But there's something about being thrown into a totally new experience together that's going to make girls gel a lot faster than normal. Between group dinners, helping each other get ready for ceremonies and socials alike, and the ever-active group message, your pledge class may already be starting to feel like a little family.

1. And like any family, you've got your share of quirky characters and embarrassing stories--but you love them, and you wouldn't have it any other way.

Extremely proactive in the group message, she's quick to always ready to gush about your most recent accomplishments and insist on bringing you tea when the first cold of the semester hits. Her sweet, protective nature has been a lifesaver while figuring out the specifics of sorority life, and she's everyone's biggest cheerleader and their shoulder to lean on when life gets overwhelming.

2. Then you've got your Sweet Little Sis

She's extremely adorable, and she's always climbing up onto people's laps, insisting that girls play with her hair during meetings, and making everyone laugh. The baby of your little family, there's nothing any of you wouldn't do if she asked. After all, how could you say no to such a sweet little smile, especially when she'll give you the biggest hug and make you feel amazing for even the littlest favor.

3. And to balance her out: All-Knowing Older Sister

The sass is strong with this one, and she'll tease you (lovingly!) about boys 'til you're blushing. But then she opens up her closet--and her heart--and suddenly it's clear that she only wants to make sure you never get hurt. Whether she has an older biological sister of her own, or she's just extremely intuitive, the girl who takes on this role seems to always know what's up. For that reason, she is more than happy to instruct, assist, and advise in a way that only older sisters can.

4. Wait, who's she? The Cool Distant Cousin

You've seen this girl around campus before, always dressed impeccably and looking like she's having the time of her life (even if she's just walking to class). And suddenly she's in your pledge class, and even though now you're kind of family, you still feel like there's a certain je ne sais quoi about her you'll never understand. The life she lives seems wildly different from yours, but now that you're experiencing something side by side, you're eager to get to know her as much as you can.

5. Of course, don't forget The Fun Aunt

Smart, cynical, and always ready to party, the girl who steps in as your 'fun aunt' is beloved by all. She's loyal but not as protective as the mom-type, and she's more likely to offer you a glass of Franzia after a bad test than offer to help you study the next time around. She's full of jokes and always seems a little clueless about exactly what's going on with things like new member education or chapter meetings, but her hilarity and go-with-the-flow attitude make her the perfect addition to your PC.

6. Behold, everyone's favorite, your Darling Nana

It's a good thing she's living in a suite this year, because this girl would go crazy if she couldn't be inviting people over to spoil them with fresh baked goods, home cooked meals, and classic movie marathons. Her quaint and gentle nature make everyone extra protective of her--god forbid anything happen to the woman who provides chocolate chip love! Her demeanor is like something out of a fairytale, and she'd do anything for her PC family, making her one of the most beloved members.

7. And, lastly, your own Fairy Godmother

She was there for you from bid day on, sending you check-in texts to make sure you got home safe, meeting you early for breakfast before your 8 am, and doing your hair before every event. Maybe you knew her before you two became members of the same PC, or maybe when you saw each other wearing those matching bid day shirts something clicked. This girl will fight for you, whether it's to make sure you get the last good cupcake in the dining hall or the last good-looking guy at a party. She's mature and fiercely invested in your happiness, and you feel really blessed to know her.

But, then again, you're thankful to have met all of these girls. There's no place else on campus you could've all come together to form this wacky little family. And throughout the rest of your time in school and in your sorority, you can feel confident that you'll all protect, love, and support each other. That's just what family does.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
