Cup Noodles, instant ramen, and hot pockets have become notoriously famous meals for college students around the United States. They're convenient, cheap, and tasty -- something one can make without a kitchen. While these seem like incredibly appealing foods, their nutritional values are a downright disappointment.
1. Kraft Mac & Cheese
This lovely specimen contains 50 grams of carbs (or 48 plus fiber) in a 70 gram serving. For reference, a donut contains 31 grams of carbs. This means that this meal will force you to produce more insulin than a Dunkin' Donuts glazed donut. Instead of packaged products, perhaps it might be wiser choice to make fresh pasta with packaged cheese.
2. Red Bull
A can of RedBull contains 40 grams of carbohydrates (for 12 fluid ounces). A can of Coca-Cola contains 39 grams of carbs. A healthier alternative would be drinking a cup of coffee, seeing as it contains only 10 grams of caffeine fewer than RedBull, but has much more beneficial factors.
3. Chips
Doritos contain 16 grams of carbs, but have barely any nutritional value. Eating a pack of veggie chips will provide a much richer nutritional array with the same crunch factor.
4. Cup Noodles
Cup Noodles not only have 38 grams of carbs per serving, but also provide 1180 milligrams of sodium, which adds up to almost 50 percent of the recommended daily intake. Miso soup, a classic Japanese dish, it just as easy to make and provides much better nutritional values, along with the same salty flavor.
5. Instant hot chocolate
A serving of 20 grams of this stuff contains 15 grams of carbs, which isn't terrible, but a slightly healthier alternative would be chocolate milk, which would also provide you with benefits like added calcium.
6. Twinkies
One Hostess Twinkie Golden Sponge Cake has 23 grams of carbs, which is considered to be 8 percent of the recommended intake. An alternative to curb a sugar craving would be to eat a protein bar, which would not only contain healthy fats, but also protein to fill you up.
7. Jamba Juice
While Jamba Juice has some benefits, the amount of sugar added to the smoothies definitely outweighs the pros. A small Carribean Passion Smoothie contains61 gramsof carbs. This is the same carb content as two Coca Colas. An alternative to Jamba Juice would be to eat an actual fruit, which would contain fibrous sugar, or get some sorbet, which be served with a smaller serving size.
8. Sugary Alcoholic Drinks
While being a very popular drink a college parties, margarita mix contains 80 grams of carbs for 12 fluid ounces. A healthier alternative would be to mix your own margarita with healthier fruit juices, rather than concentrates and syrups. Please, drink responsibly.
9. Pasta
Pasta is an easy, late night dinner, which typically turns into an everyday routine. A serving of 56 grams of this pasta will give you 42 grams of carbs. A healthier alternative is edamame pasta. The same serving size will give you 21 grams of carbs, which is half the amount of regular pasta.
10. Starbucks
Everyone's favorite coffee place is surrounded by heaps of sugar and calories. A tall caramel brûlée late (a personal favorite) has 57 grams of carbohydrates, a worse alternative to soda. A healthier (and cheaper) idea would be brewed black coffee with milk and a splash of brown sugar, which would contain no artificial flavorings or syrups, as well as less carbs.
