You Know Our Name, Not Our Story: Sorority Edition

My letters don't make me better than you, just better than who I used to be.

You Know Our Name, Not Our Story: Sorority Edition
Newberry College Panhellenic

Lately on our school's YikYak, my sorority, as well as other sororities on campus, has had their names appear and not in a positive light. I'm sure it's this way on many campuses across the country as well. I am a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma. The people on YikYak love to call us "Bigma" or "Thickma" as well as other demeaning names. They say we are fat, need to diet, etc. But my dear YikYak users, you do not know us. You do not know that we are some of the funniest, sweetest and most loyal girls you will ever meet. You only know what you think you see. You see "beauty" or whatever you think beauty is, but I can tell you, all of my sisters are beautiful. None of them deserve to be demeaned by your hateful, anonymous comments. Think what you want, or keep it to yourself. Anyone can easily post something hateful online anonymously, but would you really say that to any of our faces?

To those of you who are writing comments about other sororities on my campus, or those across the country, keep your comments to yourself as well. Although I may not know many of the other girls on my campus, let alone the country, they are my Panhellenic sisters and I love them. They do not deserve your comments either. Stop trying to cause pointless drama. This is college, and we are adults.

When you look at us, you need to realize we are more than what you see. You are on the outside looking in. You see the parties, the t-shirts, and the Instagram posts. You don't see that the sister you just called fat online was there for someone at 3 A.M. last night because her sister needed her. You see Big/Little week, functions, and what other people say about us. We are not defined by our looks. We are not defined by our stereotypes.

Being in a sorority, no matter which sorority that may be, is more than all those things you think we are. We are making a lifetime commitment to all of our previous, current, and future sisters. We joined our sorority to serve others through our philanthropy, form sincere friendships, learn to be leaders, and to find our forever family.

We respect that going Greek is not for everyone, so respect that going Greek was for us. My goal is not only to make my sorority look good, but to make Greek life in general look good. We all have different backgrounds, different stories, and different goals. But, we strive to make each other better. We strive for personal, academic and chapter success. My chapter is not your chapter. My sorority is not your sorority, but we all want to find our homes. We are all here for a common goal.

Stop talking down about sororities on YikYak. We aren't paying for our friends. Less than 2% of average college expenses go toward memebership dues. Just because I'm in a sorority does not make me fake. My sorority is nothing like what you see in the movies.

No matter our letters, we are all Greek together. We are always wearing our letters, but my letters don't make me any better than you.

So those of you who want to talk badly about my sorority, or any other sorority out there...don't. "From the outside looking in, you can't understand it. From the inside looking out, you can't explain it." So before you judge, take the time to get to know us. Not 1 of us, or even 5 of us. Take the time to get to know all of us. You might just find out that there is more to us than you thought.

Epic Creation Myths: Norse Origins Unveiled

What happened in the beginning, and how the heavens were set in motion.

The Norse Creation Myth

Now, I have the everlasting joy of explaining the Norse creation myth. To be honest, it can be a bit kooky, so talking about it is always fun. The entire cosmos is included in this creation myth, not just the earth but the sun and the moon as well. This will be a short retelling, a summary of the creation myth, somewhat like I did with Hermod's ride to Hel.

8tracks radio

We all scroll through the radio stations in the car every once in a while, whether its because we lost signal to our favorite one or we are just bored with the same ol' songs every day. You know when you're going through and you hear a song where you're just like "I forgot this existed!" and before you know it, you're singing every word? Yeah, me too. Like, 95% of the time. If you're like me and LOVE some good throwback music, here's a list of songs from every genre that have gotten lost in time, but never truly forgotten.

beer on the beach

Summer is hot and humid, and it's almost like summer was made specifically to drink the refreshing, cold, crisp wonderful, delicious, nutritious nectar of the gods. Which is none other than beer; wonderful cold beer. With summer playing peek-a-boo around the corner while we finish up this semester, it's time to discuss the only important part of summer. And if you haven't already guessed, it's beer. There are few things I take more seriously than my beer, in order are: sports... and beer. Here are my favorite summer brews:
