'I See You' The xx: An Album Review
Slant Magazine

The xx is an Indie electronic band based in London. Currently, the band has three members, including Jamie Smith, who went solo and released an album and a few singles under the title "Jamie xx." The band recently reunited and released a new album, I See You, after a long five years without releasing music. For fans of their previous work, the new album keeps their atmospheric nostalgia and alternative influence but includes a new sense of liveliness and dynamism. But despite the enhanced vocals and upbeat tracks, the overall spirit of the xx has remained constant.

1. Dangerous

What an intro. This song has a flawless blend of alternative R&B and retro beats, and the vocals are soulful and vivid. It perfectly captures the overall vibe of the album as a whole and is a great opening track. My personal favorite lyric is "let them say there are warning signs; they must be blind."

2. Say Something Loving

I got a serious Pink Floyd influence from this song. This track (specifically its intro) is easily one of my favorites on the album. The beat is so unique and smooth, and the lyrics and vocals are far less minimalistic than usual. This song sounds great in the car.

3. Lips

Lips is so different than previous 'The xx' songs and sounds almost exotic. The dominant female vocals of the lovely Romi Madley Croft are effortless and beautiful along with the background track. I would also categorize this song as one of my favorites.

4. A Violent Noise

The background track of this whimsical song is almost cosmic sounding. "Dries my eye, with every beat comes a violent noise." Although this song is very plain compared to the others, it still is unique and smooth.

5. Performance

The intro of this song, man. This is one of the slower and softer sounds on the album and it is absolutely beautiful and so raw. I think there are very few songs that I have wanted to listen to on vinyl so bad.

6. Replica

Roadtrips are what I think of when I listen to this song. This song reminds me of their older albums and brings back a lot of old memories. I would probably consider this one of the top favorites of this album.

7. Brave For You

I love, love, love this track. It slightly reminds me of the last two albums and has great variety and body to it. The dominant female vocals have always been a favorite of mine among the xx tracks, and Brave For You is a flawless example of it.

8. On Hold

On Hold being the first track from the new album I heard, initially, I was very surprised by the new take the band seemed to be taking; it's a lot more upbeat and abstract than their previous work, but the beat is very catchy along with the vocals. I can definitely say it grew on me.

9. I Dare You

This song is surprisingly not one of my favorites. I mostly just felt like it was less sophisticated than their others and I honestly got weird High School Musical vibes from it. Regardless, the lyrics are still great and it's definitely a catchy one.

10. Test Me

I think I was expecting a more upbeat song for their closing track than this one. Either way, this track is still great, and it is a really eccentric song to summarize the album as a whole.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
