Gravity is a wonderful thing, isn't it? It keeps us from flying off the face of the Earth out of our atmosphere where we can't breathe, so it keeps us alive and grounded. Being grounded can be bothersome though, if it is as a punishment. Also, the ability to fly without an airplane would be the ultimate freedom, and that's pretty difficult with gravity. Gravity is like the sensible friend who keeps you from getting too crazy and carried away. Gravity does a lot of things, but most importantly, gravity makes things fall. And you know what falls? Leaves, the temperature outside, you when you slip on ice because the temperature fell so much that everything froze. Falling can be both good and bad -- falling down the stairs is bad, but a leaf falling from a tree is good. That's because it means fall is coming, and fall is the best thing to ever happen to the Earth. Don't worry, I'm not going to go on about Pumpkin Spice lattes -- they don't even taste good. I like my coffee black and strong, with none of that sweet pumpkin shenanigans messing it up. However, pumpkin scented candles are wonderful.
A major thing that makes fall the best season is Halloween -- which is definitely one of the best holidays. Tim Burton movies, spooky costumes, haunted houses, a slight chill in the air without freezing your booty off -- it's quite a magical time, with a hint of evil mixed in. What a wonderful combination. Also, Halloween is one of the most nostalgic holidays, especially if you celebrated it by trick-or-treating as a kid. There's something liberating about walking around at night as a kid, especially all dressed up in a costume. You even get to talk to so many strangers! Because who, especially kids, actually knows everyone who lives in their neighborhood? Picking the perfect pumpkin for carving a jack-o-lantern has always been one of the most memorable parts of fall and Halloween. The whole atmosphere of the pumpkin patch makes me feel happy and warm inside. Some of my fondest memories from my childhood to reminisce back to are of wandering, and sometimes running (I was an energetic little child), through the patch, stopping to inspect the one's that caught my attention to see if they were fit to be the chosen one for the spooky jack-o-lantern it was destined to become.
There's more fun festivities associated with fall too, if Halloween isn't your thing. Hay rides, corn mazes and fairs or festivals are among some of them. There are probably also "Basic White Girl" gatherings at least once a week where they all flock in their local coffee shop, buy a low-fat pumpkin spice latte and swoon over their new pairs of leggings.
I love fall, falling asleep, falling in bottomless pits -- maybe not that last one, but you get what I mean. The smells, the beautiful, vibrant colors of the leaves and all the scary festivities make me fall in love with fall. Let us not forget that none of it would be possible without gravity. In fact, most things would be impossible without gravity. So take a moment and thank gravity for keeping you on your feet most of the time and allowing us to have this wonderful season called fall.
