Alright. Someone needs to talk about this. Someone needs to address the moronic people who are talking about how Donald Trump’s gross comments about what he can do to women is no different than 50 Shades of Grey.
First of all, let’s get one thing very clear. 50 Shades of Grey is a FICTIONAL book. It was written as a version of Twilight fan-fiction and ended up being one of those inexplicably odd monster-successes that we sometimes get.
Donald Trump is a man who is running for PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. He is in the running to be the leader of the free world. The person with the power to launch nuclear weapons, veto and pass bills that govern our lives, send people to war, nominate people to the Supreme Court and address our nation in times of triumph and sorrow.
So fictional book versus potential President of the United States.
Book vs. POTUS. Clear on that? Good.
So now that we have that little detail out of the way, let’s talk about the real issue with essentially running a smear campaign against women who have read 50 Shades of Grey being outraged about Donald Trump’s comments.
50 Shades of Grey is about a relationship between two consenting adults.
Let’s get a little more in-depth about that consent part.
When I say that it was a relationship between two consenting adults, I don’t mean that Anna and Christian Grey did a verbal “Yeah this is all good” verbal agreement. No. It was way more thought out than that.
Christian actually has a contract drawn up detailing every aspect of the dom/submissive relationship. It details what Christian can do to Anna and what he cannot do. It is incredibly graphic and fully lays out the rights that Anna has as a submissive.
Wait, it gets better.
Christian and Anna actually meet, like a real business meeting, to go over the terms of the contract and Anna removes things she is not comfortable doing from the contact. Then after she is comfortable with what is outlined in the contract, they both sign it.
See? Consenting relationship between two adults.
Okay, now let’s pan over to Trump.
The things that Trump was talking about doing in that 2005 video, aside from completely disgusting and misogynistic, did not describe a consenting relationship. Trump was not talking about “Oh well if she agrees to kissing me and having sex with me then I’ll do this.” No. He said he was entitled to it and that he could grab any woman and do whatever he wanted to her. WITHOUT CONSENT.
So let’s lay this out: 50 Shades of Grey, consenting adult relationship with contracts. Donald Trump, talking about that fact that he has done things to women just because he wanted to and he could, without consent.
Consent versus no consent.
Got it? Good.
Now we can talk about Trump dismissing his comments as “locker room talk.”
This week, quite a few athletes were asked if the comments Trump made were typical “locker room talk.” Many, including LeBron James, said ‘Absolutely not. That kind of talk is disrespectful and disgusting.’ (I knew I loved James for more than just his basketball skills).
However, there was one athlete that made headlines with his response to the “locker room talk” question.
When asked about if he thought Trump’s comments were “locker room talk,” Brady said “Thank you, guys” and then got up and walked away. (I knew I hated Brady for more than football).
Brady’s response perfectly shows why we still have an issue objectifying women in this country. Instead of calling out Trump and saying his comments were inappropriate, Brady just walked out. That kind of ‘not my problem’ reaction perpetuates the continuation of women being treated as no more than sexual objects.
People, especially men, need to stand against comments that demean and insult women. By not saying anything, you are essentially giving people like Trump a pass on being a perverted and sexist jerk who apparently think that essential raping and sexually assaulting people is totally fine if you’re powerful enough.
I’m flabbergasted at the amount of women who are still supporting Trump. I’m amazed at the amount of people who are giving this man a pass with the bullshit “boys will be boys” response.
We will never be able to effect change on the sexualization and objectification of woman and the pervasive rape and sexual assault culture until comments like Trump’s are condemned by everyone.
Bottom line, guys and girls: Trump saying these things Was. Not. Okay. Not even a little bit. Not as a human being. Not as a father. And definitely not as a presidential candidate. Wake up, America. It’s time for this nightmare to be over.
