We live in a world where people will say things to us and they have good intentions with their words, but it doesn't always come across as so. Allow me to elaborate. Let's say someone comes up to you and says, "Oh wow! You look really tired today. Are you okay?" Clearly, the person saying this is concerned about your well being but in reality, it sounds like they're trying to say that you look like crap.
I usually get this comment a lot, mostly because I have naturally dark circle under my eyes and when I don't wear under eye concealer, it looks like I haven't slept in 40 years. I appreciate the concern but when people tell me this, it's kind of like a slap in the face. Nobody really wants to be told that they look tired or dead. So, why do we say this? Why do we make these types of comments even though they come with a negative connotation?
I think we all are guilty of doing this at times and we must learn to refrain from does this. We need more positivity in our lives, especially since we live in such a negative world. Here are some things we should stop saying:
"You don't need to go to work out. You're so skinny!" Do not say this! No, no, no! Just because someone is skinny doesn't mean that they're healthy! People don't always work out to lose weight either. They do it become healthy and to strengthen their muscles.
"You don't need to be on a diet!" Are you my doctor? No. Don't tell someone what they should and should not do. Especially since you don't know what their reasoning is behind it.
"Other people have it worse than you." Words like this sting. You don't need to compare someone else's problems with another person just to validate it, people just need words of encouragement.
These examples are the ones that I hear most often. They've been said to me, they've been said to my friends, and I know that these words hurt. We must be careful with our word choices because those words are never forgotten. Speak with good intentions. Speak with positivity.
