Whether you want to "Make America Great Again" by voting for Donald Trump or "Stand with Her" by voting for Hillary, it won't be your most important vote come November 8. In November, the third class of the United State Senators, 34 Senators, and all 435 House of Representatives elected officials will be voted on and elected. These 469 members of Congress will have a lot more influence over the way this country is ran over the next four years than Trump or Hillary. So before you get into a heated debate over wanting Trump or Hillary, you should take a step back and research the Congressman you will be voting on.
While the president holds a lot of power with executive order and being Commander and Chief, they are not the ones writing the laws and creating the corruption everyone is trying to avoid. There was a time in America's history where the president used their power of executive order more often, but the past few presidents have averaged just over 30 uses per year while in office. 30 uses per year can sound drastic and might concern some, but Congress has looked at over 10,000 pieces of legislation since the start of 2015. You can argue that a lot of the legislation fell apart even before it was brought to the floor to discuss, but there is still a lot that was brought to the floor and a lot that has passed.
People want to talk about how they don't want a shady woman like Hillary in the White House or a blunt, racist, man like Trump, but they don't talk about the Congressman that have made a career out of their job and been elected term after term often unopposed. Senator Patrick Leahy from Vermont currently has the most seniority in office with 42 years. Leahy took office in 1975, probably before you were even born. This man has created a career out of being a Senator, just image the amount of influence he has had on the country. Lets say 2,000 bills are introduced to the Senate per term, that means Leahy has seen over 12,000 bills. Besides the Founding Father's he is probably the person who has had the most say in what goes on in the country.
Before you get into another heated debate over who the next president is going to be, get into a headed debate over your next Senator. They might not get in the spotlight as often but they are just as important, if not more important than the president. With Congress no one notices them until they mess up but they are the people that are going to make the president look good.
"Every citizen of this country should be guaranteed that their vote matters, that their vote is counted, and that in the voting booth, their vote has a much weight as that of any CEO, any member of Congress, or any President." - Barbara Boxer
