Why Talking About Topics That Make You Uncomfortable Is Important

Let's face it, there are subjects in life that we as people go out of our way to avoid simply because they make us uncomfortable. Some topics seem to be something that is seen as a dread because of the discomfort that is brought to you or the people around you. But in some cases, the excuse of it being "uncomfortable" is not acceptable.

Starting with sex. Sex seems to make people weary, especially when the subject is brought up around one's children. Whether it be talked about in a middle school's health class, discussion amongst friends, or the birds in the bees talk between parents and their offsprings. All of theses situations put the topic of sex in an uncomfortable situation. But does that mean we shouldn't continue talking about it? No. In order for those at the age of the sex discussion to understand the importance of SAFE sex, it must be talked about, even if it makes some people feel "weird". Taking away the topic of sex in instances that may seem uncomfortable could lead to kids/teenagers trying things on their own, without a knowledge of consequences.

Another topic that can't be hidden in the dark due to feeling nervous about talking about is race/racism. Although it is perceived that to resolve the issue of racism is to say that we are "color blind", it really just saves us the conversation of race. But that's a problem within itself. Speaking as not seeing someone's race is discrediting someones individuality and their differences. Speaking about the issues that still exist to this day with racism is vital if we intend to actually reach a point of equality in humanity.

A very touchy subject that tends to be avoided because of discomfort is the issue of rape or sexual abuse. Because a topic like rape and sexual abuse can be so vulgar and heart breaking, people will avoid the topic all in itself. But in order to decrease the eye opening amount of rapes and sexual abused found within the world, the topic must be served justice. Whether it's about the number of assaults happening, the victims of these assaults, or what the consequences are/should be of these horrendous things, this discussion cannot be avoided.

Lastly, differences in opinions. Whether it be political affiliation, religious beliefs, sexual preferences, etc. When a topic like these that can be taken to heart, it is common that people don't bring up these aspects. But without discussing differences in beliefs, how can one understand other points of view? Not discussions in which it turns into a battle of who is right and who is wrong, but reasoning as to why you believe the way you do.

Talking about these topics may be uncomfortable, but they're necessary. Without feeling uncomfortable, there will be no room for growth in humanity. And if we don't intend to grow as a species, what's the point of being here anyway?

Don't let the possibility of feeling uncomfortable keep you from growing and learning as a person. Challenge yourself with the intention of making this world a better place to be in.

bruce springsteen album cover born in the usa

Anyone who was born and raised in New Jersey (or anywhere really) knows of Bruce Springsteen, whether or not they like him is a whole other situation. I hope that his hundreds of classic rock songs and famous high energy performances, even in his sixties he can put on better concerts than people half his age, are at least recognizable to people of all ages. Love him or hate him (I identify with the former) you have to admit that some of his songs and interviews have inspirational quotes and lyrics.
