Why Spring is Better than Winter

Winter: noun A seemingly never-ending season of the year in which puffy jackets are trendy, gloves are necessary to prevent extreme frostbite, motivation and energy are often lacking, outdoor activities are limited and the only reason people tolerate it is in the hopes of a snow day off from school.

Spring: noun A glorious season of the year in which the sun decides to shine once again, flowers come up from hiding, the school year begins to wind down and frankly everything is just better.

Don't get me wrong I'm not a winter-hater, I just get sick of it. The beginning of winter is always somewhat refreshing; you find yourself breaking out those comfy sweaters, drinking hot chocolate again and looking forward to the holidays as well as a new year.

But winter is also long and slow and cold. So after that one snow day everyone had been hoping for, I always find myself praying that the snow stays away and the sun starts to shine a little more.

Spring Fever: it's inevitable. If you don't believe me, stay tuned for some reasons why spring has got winter beat, and maybe you'll start to develop some symptoms of Spring Fever too.

1. It's warm outside again, bless.

Remember when 50 degree weather was considered a "warm day" in the winter? You'll soon remember the true meaning of warmth this season.

2. Darties, dages, pool parties.

Major key.

3. Outdoor concert and festival season is beginning.

That's right, break out those high waisted shorts and flower headbands because it's time to get festive.

4. Spring clothes are more fun.

Say goodbye to the limiting winter wardrobe of pants and sweaters and hello to the wonderful world of dresses, skirts, shorts, bathing suits, tank tops, t-shirts and basically whatever you want to wear. More colors, more options, more cute picture-ops.

5. Ice cream and water ice can be eaten outside again.

Nothing goes better with a warm spring day than an ice cream cone or a cup of water ice. Even better, we can now eat out in the open rather than burrowed inside our dorm rooms.

6. You can't stop smiling because SUN.

Here's a science lesson: your body gets the Vitamin D it needs from exposure to the sun. In other words, sun = happiness.

7. Spring Break.

A week off from school and responsibilities. Bliss. Cue the beach vacation Instagrams.

8. You trade in the winter tundra for beach trips.

Other than that one obligatory weekend trip to NYC, there are not many fun activities to choose from when it's 30 degrees outside. Fear not, with spring comes beach trips every month or every weekend. A day at the beach never gets old.

9. You can finally exercise outside again without getting frostbite on your face.

10. Everything is just prettier.

As they say, "spring has sprung," aka flowers are blooming, trees will once again have leaves, we'll be reminded what green grass looks like and the always beautiful cherry blossoms will make an appearance.

11. Literally so many animals.

Hibernation has ended. Two words: baby animals.

12. Coats? Who needs them!

No coat, no problem.

13. Longer days.

Gone are the days where it's dark by 4 p.m. and there never seems to be enough hours in the day. With spring comes more hours, more sunlight, more time to do everything you need to do.

14. The anticipation of summer.

Not trying to jump the gun here, but as spring arrives we're reminded of how close we are to summer; no classes, no obligations, just endless days of sunlight.

So, yeah. Feeling a little spring fever coming on now? No worries, Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog saw his shadow just this week and declared an early spring this year!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
