We all have experienced that feeling when you feel everyone is staring at you. A rummage of thoughts start to pour through your head including, “Oh no is there something on my face? Maybe in my teeth?” Now, take that situation and multiply it by a billion. This is how I imagine it must feel to be a celebrity, nonetheless to be the celebrity who is performing at the world renowned Super Bowl.
The famous and fabulous Lady Gaga was chosen to perform at the 2017 Super Bowl, and she was nothing short of thrilling and brilliant. It is what occurred after her performance that absolutely disgusts me. After Gaga gave her performance, viewers were quick to criticize and body-shame her figure.
The pressure to be perfect that is placed on women is alarmingly vast and growing at a rapid speed. Society tells women that we must be paper thin in order to be successful, but when did success begin to correlate with our outward appearance? When will a woman’s worth not be declared by her looks, but by her actions and her integrity? When will society wake up and realize the injustice it is doing to girls of all ages all over the world? The sad effect that these situations have on girls is blatantly obvious. Girls work tirelessly to lose that extra weight, or to get that certain "look."
Many women have begun looking in all the wrong places for their worth and value. I have found, as cheesy as it sounds, that inner beauty is much more appreciated, and treasured than any sort of outward beauty. We are all fearfully and wonderfully made by our heavenly father, and that is not going to change. Maybe society isn’t going to wake up and have these realizations, but that is okay with me. We must realize that looking for worth and value in materialistic objects or even other people will always end up being insufficient. The day you let go, and let God take over will be the day you realize your worth and endless potential.
So, keep your chin up, and go be the best version of yourself. You may not have a great day every day, but each day proposes a new challenge of bettering yourself. I say to heck with what society wants, and let’s just be whatever it is we aspire to be.
