iiSuperwomanii has been on YouTube for years and has certainly lived up to her pseudonym. Lilly Singh has worked tirelessly since 2010, making some insanely touching and hilarious colored-people commentaries with her characters. She is very relatable and provides real comfort to the people who find a friend in her through her camera .
In the last few months, she has grown to be a figurehead far outside of YouTube. She is one of the select few to successfully break into mainstream media. She's appeared on the Tonight Show, has gone on an international tour, breaking into other social media platforms and film. She's amazing, and through it all remains so personable.
But there is one thing that's been missing for a long, long time: an album. The people who've watched her videos have seen her rap in what seems like hundreds of parodies and battles and have prayed that an album would drop at some point.
Superwoman gives us Voices, a Lemonade-type album with five tracks and some quality visuals to back it up.
But frankly, the album itself isn't what really hits me. I like Lilly, I like her music, and, like pretty much everyone who's watched her for a while, I was incredibly proud to see her release an honest-to-God album, but that's not the point.
YouTube is a somewhat monotonous medium on certain levels. The number of successful creators who are P.O.C. can feel noticeably small when compared to the number of creators who are white. At the same time, it remains one of the most prominent platforms on the Internet, and equal representation is a must if it intends to continue in its success.
To see a young Indian woman with a colloquial humor that touches so many people is incredibly gratifying and inspiring. The fact that she has shared her drive and desire with the people who follow her extends beyond gratification. Whether or not her music is of your particular taste is completely irrelevant because the act itself has already started to inspire so many. Read her video comments and you'll find the type of emotion usually reserved for one's closest friends and family.
Because she does what she does so well and with her whole heart, Lilly Singh has inspired real love and given so many a drive to do right by the world in which they live.
One love, Superwoman.
