In the world of superhero comics. Everyone has their great times, and their bad times. For a while, one of the biggest whipping boys in comics was Aquaman. Everyone made fun of him for being a "lame" character. But the undersea hero has hit a new renaissance, with very popular comic series and a potentially badass portrayal by Jason Momoa in the upcoming DCEU. Nowadays, the newest whipping boy at this point is Green Lantern.
Green Lantern is one of the most powerful, and coolest characters in all of the DC Universe. He has a great origin story and a mythos so vast and rich that it has so much potential for stories and eventually, films. But after one very crappy movie in 2011. Green Lantern became the poster child for bad superhero movies, and what that does to their public images. After the movie, Green Lantern material was pushed into the back row of most marketing material for DC. Even as far as in the New DCEU films. He is being left out of the upcoming Justice League until a later date. Despite being one of the founding members of the team back in 1960.
To push the disrespect even further. Everyone and their mothers knew about Green Lantern being the "failure" among several very successful superhero movies. So then, all of geek culture and their mothers were throwing out "Green Lantern sucks!" like they had done more than just heard the failure of the Emerald Knight.
It makes sense of course, but for me. Green Lantern was one of my favorite superheros. I was really excited for more Green Lantern before I saw the abomination of a movie they made about him. But instead of turning me away from the character. It brought me closer. I knew there were good stories to tell about Green Lantern and I was going to find them. I picked up "Green Lantern: Rebirth" and "The Sinestro Corps War," all of which were excellent. and made him my favorite superhero right under Batman.
Green Lantern also has probably one of the most important roles in the Justice League. he's the cocky funny dude. he's Hawkeye, but he actually deserves to be there. He would bring some real levity and humor to the DC movies, also, if they cast it right. He and The Flash would have the new best bromance chemistry ever done in a superhero movie. Possibly rivaling Tony Stark/Bruce Banner from the Avengers Franchise.
All I'm trying to say is. Yes, I understand that he's not that important to a lot of people. Yes, he's just another superhero in a sea filled with arguably too many already. But Green Lantern is different. He is one of the most relateable characters in the DC canon. He's very human and he has a world that could arguably rival that of Batman and Gotham City. He's important and I hope he gets the respect he deserves soon.
