"Lilo & Stitch" is Disney's weird, charming little sister of a movie ... kind of like Lilo herself.
Lilo is an unreal character, like no other Disney character ever seen before. She is a quirky little kid, who is beyond her time. After re-watching "Lilo & Stitch" as an adult, it is apparent Lilo suffers some type of mental issue. She is dealing with an issue that she herself cannot always control. Many children can relate to this. Lilo is just trying to fit in (like all kids do), but her peers see her as weird. This is something that all children should know, and watch first hand on the screen to get a feeling of what it is like to not fit in, no matter how popular they are. Lilo shows us in "Lilo & Stitch" that it is okay to be outspoken. That it is okay to do what you want. And most importantly, be different.
"Lilo & Stitch" is not like any other Disney cartoon. It has depth, and shows real people struggling. This film shows people in a different light than what Disney usually goes for. Lilo and Nani are unhappy. They are a family that is struggling to be together, and maintain their life in a good way. They are fighting for their lives in a true personal issue that is relatable to other people. It is not some princess story that will never happen to anyone in this world unless you are an actor on "Disney on Ice." This is a common issue with Disney movies. As great as they are, what are they teaching our youth? Princesses always find love?In 85 minutes "Lilo & Stitch" is over. You are now a wiser person. Kids of all ages can not help themselves but fall in love with a strange little guy named Stitch. But what you really get out of "Lilo & Stitch," is a better understanding of the truths of this world.
