Why I Am Breaking Up With The EU

No, not the European Union, the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

Let me start this off by saying that I REALLY love Star Wars. If I had to choose between Marvel and Star Wars, I'd pick Star Wars every time.

This love started probably before I could even talk. My parents raised me and my sister on it. We had two posters that stayed in our computer room, one that now resides in my room. I could name every character on them at the age of four, but it wasn’t 'til I was ten that I really fell in love with the world of Star Wars.

Like many families, we had an Xbox. I remember the trip to Walmart that resulted in the purchase of “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.” My mom disliked the game, but I fell in love with it and the rest is history. It had a great story, fantastic graphics (for the time), and a twist so surprising that I dropped my controller.

That was my first foray into the land of the Expanded Universe. And it didn’t stop there.

I spent many summers scouring the shelves of the Athens-Limestone Public Library, searching for every Star Wars book I could get my hands on, of which there were many. I read what I could from “Junior Jedi Knights” all the way to “Fate of the Jedi” (which I still have yet to finish). Darth Bane series? I read it. That weird novel “Splinter of the Mind’s Eye”? You betcha.

That being said, I have not read every book, but it is not for lack of trying.

But my story does not stop there. I am not afraid to admit that I spent too many hours reading Wookiepedia, the Star Wars wiki.

But last year, Disney delivered a harsh blow. They removed many of the Expanded Universe stories from the official canon, so now I have very mixed feelings about the new film that will be debuting in December.

I want to be so excited that I can’t stop talking about it, but I’m not.

I’m still bitter that I will never see the twins, Jacen and Jaina, on screen, or that we will never experience the amazing character of Tenel Ka: mother, Jedi, and queen. I am extremely sad that Mara Jade, one of the best characters to ever exist (thank you Timothy Zahn), will not be Luke’s former enemy turned wife. With this heart, I have decided on one course of action.

I have decided to break up with the Expanded Universe.

It’s been a fun ride, but our relationship has come to an end. I cannot fully embrace what is ahead of me if I keep looking behind me and mourning what will never be. Maybe there will be some slight hint of my wasted dreams in this new film, maybe there won’t be.

It has Han and Leia, so I really can’t complain too much.

Epic Creation Myths: Norse Origins Unveiled

What happened in the beginning, and how the heavens were set in motion.

The Norse Creation Myth

Now, I have the everlasting joy of explaining the Norse creation myth. To be honest, it can be a bit kooky, so talking about it is always fun. The entire cosmos is included in this creation myth, not just the earth but the sun and the moon as well. This will be a short retelling, a summary of the creation myth, somewhat like I did with Hermod's ride to Hel.
