What USA Volleyball Has Taught me

Because athletes can always bring a powerful message.

So summer is probably everyone's favorite season. How could it not be? We have warm weather, beaches, and sunshine for three months of the year. It's a great time to remember how nice it can be to just sit back and relax. With summer comes one of my favorite things: The Summer Olympics. More importantly, the volleyball and beach volleyball teams compete in The Olympics.

I have played volleyball for close to 6 years in school. It's the one sport that has truly made me so excited. Ever since I stopped playing, I miss it more and more. But luckily every four years comes The Olympics that I anxiously await. Kerri Walsh, April Ross, and Misty May are some of the big names that most have probably heard of. Kerri Walsh and Misty May played together for years winning three gold medals together. Misty May retired, and Kerri Walsh wanted the best. That's when she asked April Ross to be her teammate. The two of them have dominated the court for the past few years. Once they came to The Olympics, they were able to continue to bring the heat. They fought and played a very good game until a brutal loss to Brazil. It was heartbreaking to watch it happen. But after that I had a feeling that something good will still come from this incredible duo. That's when they were able to take down the other Brazil beach volleyball team to win USA the bronze medal. It had announcers saying that bronze was the new gold. Which I could not agree with more. They put up a powerful fight. It looked like they were defeated after the first set, but they proved everyone that the game was just beginning and they were able to take down Brazil.

The USA volleyball team showed just as powerful of a fight. They were playing Serbia for the first time to have their spot in the gold game. But after five sets, and countless incredible plays, they lost and went on to compete for the bronze medal. From there they went to play the Netherlands for the bronze medal where they were able to come back after a lost set to win.

This group of incredible women athletes were able to prove that giving up or giving in should never be an option. They fought off the tears and put their best foot forward.

They are all role models for pushing and thriving and moving forward in their lives, despite being upset or having fear of losing and they went forward to make our whole country proud of an incredible fight.

Sure, I spend four years waiting for two weeks of excitement, but it always is a well waited four years to see the best athletes come and make all of us very proud Americans.

So thank you, USA Volleyball teams, for always pushing and always making sure that no matter what medal you get it's a still a medal, and you still pushed yourselves to make it to the end.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
