What Marvel Did Is Not OK

The new comic for Captain America has gone too far.

Spoiler alert!

If you're a comic book fan, a Marvel fan or just a news reader, you might have heard about the controversial Captain America: Steve Rogers #1. In two words, Marvel ruined Steve Rogers so effectively that I'm not entirely sure they're going to win me back. In the comic, he states very plainly, "Hail Hydra."

Now, if you read some news articles or comic book fan articles or blog posts, they'll tell you not to be upset by the comic as it's only the first issue, and Marvel has a plan... because Marvel always has a plan. Here's what I have to say to them and Marvel: fight me.

What Marvel did is so far from OK. First of all, Steve Rogers was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, two Jewish writers. Let's analyze that. Captain America, one of the best known comic book characters, was created by two Jewish writers. Captain America is an American icon, especially as of late, and changing his background story to this is antisemitic. Why? Hydra has major ties to the Nazis. I don't know about you, but I distinctly remember a least one world war where the Americans were very against the Nazis.

Taking such an iconic American symbol, who is all about freedom and liberty (and red, white and blue tights) and giving him ties to Nazi sympathizers, is so wrong. Not only does it go against the very basis of Steve Rogers (who in the cinematic universe fought the Nazis and punched out Hitler several times in "The First Avenger"), but it goes against his creators. It's crazy to me that someone would make Captain America a part of Hydra, something he's be fighting against for as long as he's been a comic book character.

In other terms, it would like making Superman (another notable comic book character created by the Jewish writers Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster) a Nazi sympathizer. Could you imagine the uproar if Clark Kent aka Kal-El aka Superman suddenly became a part of the very organization he was working against? Because that's what Marvel has done to Captain America.

By creating this quite frankly atrocious comic book, they are erasing so much history. They are erasing so much of who Steve Rogers is. Throughout our entire cinematic experience (I know the universes are different, stay with me), we have seen Captain America fight Hydra. "Captain America: the First Avenger" and "Captain America: the Winter Soldier" were all about taking down Hydra! Steve Rogers hates bullies, and the biggest bully of all is on the Nazi side group, Hydra.

In what world would Captain America side with them? Apparently, this one. And while some people are content to wait and see where this goes, I am not one of them. We should not stand for Captain America, Steve Rogers, to be a part of a Nazi organization. Simon and Kirby wouldn't have wanted that and if we stand by and let Marvel continue with this atrocity, we're no better than them and their apparently antisemitic views.

This is antisemitism at its finest, and I don't know about you, but this is the final straw in a long list of bad things Marvel has done. I love Marvel, but this is too far. Change it, because Steve Rogers would not stand for this.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
