The last few weeks I've been going through the books of 1, 2, 3 John alongside two other girls. In this study, we've unpacked the context for each book.
Prior to this study, I never realized how rich and beautiful these three books are, especially when read with the gospel of John.
John's writings are unique and offer a different perspective of the same truth proclaimed in every gospel. By examining the context, the books of 1, 2, and 3 John become so much sweeter. Knowing that while John was writing these books he was the last disciple, it provides an entirely new outlook.
John was so desperate to preserve the gospel and its truth. He was determined to illustrate how the gospel has the power to change every facet of one's life.
This is specifically seen through John's use of language. He uses various words such as light and darkness as a way to tangibly describe what the gospel does.
Additionally, John uses the word 'abide' in all of his writings. This word is repeated again and again, but what does it actually mean?
There are a variety of definitions for this word, but two definitions defined by Merriam-Webster's dictionary state that to abide is to "remain stable or fixed in a state" or to "conform to."
So, now having this definition, what does it mean to abide in Christ? What does it mean that the love of God abides in us?
These are hard questions, and don't necessarily have an easy "one size fits all" answer.
I am by no means qualified to provide an expert opinion on how the act of abiding works, but I do know that it is an action. Therefore, it is a choice because all action requires some form of choice.
I could go on and on about what this word could be interpreted to mean, but for now I'm going to keep researching. I'm going to keep listening for the Lord. I'm going to continue writing, so part two of this blog will be coming soon.
