Selfies. What are selfies? Selfies are pictures of people that represent the fact that there were 42 other identical attempts that simply did not cut it. If you think about it, that statement is 110% true! How many times have you taken a picture and deleted it because of the lighting, the way you looked, or because of “that person” who loves to photobomb everyone’s pictures? If we are being completely honest, no one really knows what the purpose of a selfie is for. Here are 5 examples of selfies and how they are actually perceived.
- Sometimes we scroll through our news feed and come across scenarios like this (boy selfie at dentist). In this situation, the caption may be “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14” Well buddy, none of this is quite acceptable. Nor, in my opinion, would it be pleasing in the Lord’s sight to post something like this on social media. While you might have felt the Holy Spirit calling you during this moment, let’s just assume that this is one of those moments when we misunderstand God’s directions. Let’s call this one “The Calling.”
- Other times we might scroll through and see things like this (girl and monkey). To us single-pringles-and-ready-to-mingles, it’s actually quite depressing and a great reminder that our chances of being a forever cat or dog person is just barely out of our reach. Thank you. Don’t get me wrong, I wish you two the best; but when you post a selfie with your special someone has the same cheesy caption every time, do not doubt the power of the “unfriend” button. This one: “I’m 12 and I’m Almost Positive I Love You.”
- To add to the mix, here’s this (man with crashed car). Honestly at this point you can either A) applaud the fact that they probably risked their life to get a good picture, or B) applaud because even after they crashed the car they remembered to take a picture. It’s one thing to capture moments that will never happen again, but there’s gotta be a line drawn somewhere. This one can be called “Evel Knievel.”
- Also this beauty (Hilary Duff with drawn on eyebrow). First off I would like to give Hilary Duff props for teaching her pet ferret to “sit and stay” on her forehead. I can barely get my dog to stay in one place for .0225 seconds. This selfie explains what you do during your free time. *watches YouTube makeup tutorial video and attempts to fill in eyebrows. Now I’m not makeup savvy, but I’m pretty positive that that’s not how you do it. Just think, if God wanted all of us to have eyebrows as bushy and voluminous as Robert Pattinson, then he would have. However, with this being said, that doesn’t mean you need to go and pluck the heck out of them. You will officially look kin to Voldemort. A good name for this one is “The Little Girl that Shouldn’t.”
- Finally, you might see this one (double chin selfie). This is a picture symbolizing betrayal. The sender trusted handed over their dignity to the receiver by trusting them just enough to risk their well-being and sanity. However if you happen to scroll upon a scaring image such as this, it also resembles a sign or pure friendship. I can’t tell you how many times I have used SnapChat’s filters and sent them to a best friend, only to find that they had that same picture saved for my birthday 6 months later. Nothing says happy birthday like a reminder of just how much dessert you had during the time of the picture. “Happy Birthday, Fatso, lay off the tweenkies.” Such a thoughtful friend you have to remember to post an image as petrifying as this. Titled: “The Haunting.”
