"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" is a good movie; it does a lot of things right for a large scale superhero movie. However, it does not tell a good enough story to make it a good movie. BVS has many great action scenes that you would expect from a Zack Snyder film containing Batman and Superman. However this movie has a lot of story flaws when it boils down to the actual movie itself.
In the film, Ben Affleck does a good job portraying the Dark Knight as a character. Batman is a really popular character that many people admire; however, this isn't a Batman that fans have grown to admire. I love Batman, a little too much actually, and a couple of things about this portrayal of Batman really rubbed my comic book loving nerd self the wrong way. Batman started shooting people with guns. Batman has always had a strict no kill policy as it's what set him apart from the bad guys. Even if I were to set this aside, the movie was still difficult to watch with the fight between Batman and Superman being resolved simply by the two's mothers sharing the same name, to Jesse Eisenberg playing a really strange and difficult to watch performance as Lex Luthor.
Not only do these problems plague the movie, but BVS had some issues with making all of the characters in the film feel relevant. If you make a large scale superhero movie, I feel you need to make all of the characters feel relevant. For a majority of the movie, I felt the movie didn't give Superman enough material to make him feel relevant to the plot other than the final fight scene. Then there was Lois Lane who I felt was integral to the plot sometimes, then other times she felt like a forced character that the writers threw into to humanize the godlike Superman. This made the movie feel like I was watching several plot lines that had no connection other that the fight in the middle of the film between Batman and Superman.
Something that "Captain America: Civil War" did right was make all of the characters in the story feel relevant to the plot without taking away too much from Cap. "Ant-Man" is one of my favorite characters in the Marvel universe and felt relevant every time he was on screen and his cameo in the film did not feel force at all. Even down to the heroes making new appearances like Spider-Man and Black Panther felt like they were relevant to the main plot in some way. Something that BVS should take note of for future films in the series.
Even the plot in 'Civil War' felt miles better than the plot of BVS. I felt when it came time for the heroes of the Marvel universe to start duking it out, it wasn't forced and actually felt like it needed to happen. In contrast to BVS where it felt very forced and almost didn't even need to happen. The action scenes in 'Civil War' are just as good if not better that BVS that they make a much stronger impact on the main plot.
While BVS is a mindless slugfest that pits superhero vs. superhero, 'Civil War' is the superior film in my opinion due to the fact that the plot and characters all feel more relevant to the action of the film.
