Working as first a staff writer and then the editor for my high school paper, Hall Highlights, I was able to habitually flex the writing skills that drew me to my Professional Writing major here at Carnegie Mellon. Unfortunately, I never felt a connection to the staff or writing style tied to The Tartan, or its sister news organizations. As a result, I have been unable to satisfy the little voice in my head that aches to provide a wry perspective on our campus community, greek life, and our daily collegiate struggles. I have developed critical journalistic skills through the professional writing curriculum at this school, and I hope to gain an online portfolio in which I can display my editorial prowess. I also actively miss working on a news team, and hope to revisit the experiences I cherished working on one in high school. As Carnegie Mellon's New York Times Collegiate Representative, I have been promoting student body engagement in current events for the majority of this school year, and I would jump at the opportunity to provide a student's perspective on these current events at The Odyssey. Friends of mine writing for The Odyssey at alternate schools have spoken very highly of their experiences at this organization, and I was thrilled to hear of its expansion to CMU's campus.
