Unsolicited Advice For Life
Peggy Sirota / GQ

There are millions of lists on the internet that tell you step by step everything you need to know from how to create the perfect date to making the best soy free, fresh, free trade, organic sea salt pepperoni pizza. Obviously some are more helpful than others, and today, because you did not ask, I’m going to give you a list of life rules to live by. I’m going to give them to you because I’m a narcissistic little stinkbug who thinks my advice is queen of all advice to give. This ladies and gentleman will be the end-all-be-all of rules to abide by. After this you can cut yourself off from the Internet forever and never have to learn another thing for the rest of your life. You’re welcome in advance.

To be honest I hope you get something out of these. Before I go one I want to say this: “Rules are for the obedience of fools, and the guidance of wise men.”

  1. Quality over quantity. This applies to quite a bit of life.
  2. If you’re interested in someone ask him or her out.
  3. In conjunction with number two; rejection is as good for the soul as acceptance.
  4. There is no such word as can’t.
  5. You’re allowed to dislike someone just make sure it isn’t over something petty.
  6. Life isn’t required to give you closure. Accept that, and learn what you can from your experience.
  7. Tip 20% or more. Generally more.
  8. Tell people you’re proud of them.
  9. Follow at least one sport/team. It is good to be a part of a culture bigger than yourself.
  10. Moderation is key, but let loose sometimes.
  11. Just because it’s bad for someone else doesn’t mean it’s bad for you and vice versa.
  12. Make your own decisions & opinions.
  13. Don’t jump on a bandwagon, but if you do, own up to it.
  14. Authenticity is a lost art. Learn it.
  15. Pay for a stranger.
  16. Pay for your friends, and don’t except anything back.
  17. Make yourself uncomfortable every once in awhile.
  18. Be active whether it's yoga, fishing, or weight lifting.
  19. Give graciously of time, energy, and grace to those whom you love.
  20. Admit when you’re wrong, and forgive yourself.
  21. Stand up when you’re right.
  22. Opinions are not fact.
  23. Become a regular at places you love. The benefits will overflow in various aspects.
  24. Go to the movies alone.
  25. Have at least 6x what you make in a pay period in your savings then invest the rest. Let your money work for you.
  26. Enjoy your vices, but don’t let them rule you.
  27. Know at least one good joke.
  28. Learn to cook a couple phenomenal dishes.
  29. Always carry cash.
  30. Read a book before you see the movie.
  31. Enjoy the arts, and have a favorite.
  32. Support artists and businesses you love.
  33. Treat the less fortunate as humans.
  34. There is a time for everything. Be in the good and bad moments.
  35. If you can look at yourself at the end of the day and say you did your best, then that’s all you can ask of yourself. You are your own best critic.

What happened in the beginning, and how the heavens were set in motion.

The Norse Creation Myth

Now, I have the everlasting joy of explaining the Norse creation myth. To be honest, it can be a bit kooky, so talking about it is always fun. The entire cosmos is included in this creation myth, not just the earth but the sun and the moon as well. This will be a short retelling, a summary of the creation myth, somewhat like I did with Hermod's ride to Hel.

beer on the beach

Summer is hot and humid, and it's almost like summer was made specifically to drink the refreshing, cold, crisp wonderful, delicious, nutritious nectar of the gods. Which is none other than beer; wonderful cold beer. With summer playing peek-a-boo around the corner while we finish up this semester, it's time to discuss the only important part of summer.
