It's Okay To Be Undecided

The goal is to find your ideal career and become the successful person you always wanted to be.

Graduating high school is one of the most exciting moments of your life. Slightly less exciting is when you're undecided on a major and your aunts, uncles, brothers, cousins and grandparents ask you repeatedly what you want to major in.

Walking into orientation everybody gets divided up by their major-- you watch everybody stand up and walk to their respective group when their intended major is called. Then the last group, the "undecided" majors are called. While everyone is making new friends with people with similar interests you're left with the other 47 incoming freshmen who have no idea what they're doing with their lives.

Being undecided is nervewracking. Everybody comes from a different place in their life and not everyone at 18 years old knows what they want to do for the next 50 years. Everyone has their own opinions, but coming from someone who went into college undecided, it really feels like you're stuck between a rock and a hard place.

You don't want to take a year off because you may never go back to school. But you don't want to waste your money on classes you may never need.

Being undecided your freshman year of college most likely will run you some money. But going to school, even though I was undecided, was the best thing I ever did. Taking courses in multiple subjects will help you decide what fields you may be interested in. Personally, after taking biology and physical science at the college level, I decided to stay as far away from anything to do with science or the medical field as possible, because that just wasn't something I was interested in.

About a month into school I decided I wanted to be a teacher. Almost everyone who goes to school undecided says eventually the perfect career will come to you and I absolutely agree. Although Google searching "easy jobs that make a lot of money" may seem like a good way to choose a career, in reality going to school and experiencing what different majors might be like and talking to other students within the field is slightly more effective, even though it may set you behind. After completing my freshman year, I've taken 4 classes that are only for intended education majors. Needless to say, I now have 45 credits in which only 32 count towards my major. However, although I lost some money going to college and I may be graduating a semester behind, being undecided and talking to people of different majors and trying out various subjects at the college level made me realize that there really is no better career for me than education. I couldn't imagine myself in any other field.

In the end, it's not about the money or how long you're in school. Everybody graduates college in debt. The goal is to find your ideal career and become the successful person you always wanted to be, and what better place to do that than college?

Bruce Springsteen's Top 7 Lyrics

Everything Bruce says in his classic rock songs.

bruce springsteen album cover born in the usa

Anyone who was born and raised in New Jersey (or anywhere really) knows of Bruce Springsteen, whether or not they like him is a whole other situation. I hope that his hundreds of classic rock songs and famous high energy performances, even in his sixties he can put on better concerts than people half his age, are at least recognizable to people of all ages. Love him or hate him (I identify with the former) you have to admit that some of his songs and interviews have inspirational quotes and lyrics.
