This 2016 election has been monumental because of how divisive it has made the country. U.S. citizens have never hated two candidates so much before in a presidential election; Democrats absolutely despise Donald Trump and Republicans cannot stand Hillary Clinton. Both candidates are extremely polarizing and voters, whether they are a Democrat or a Republican, can all agree on that. I asked my friends and family what they fear will happen if Trump or Hillary wins.
Here were some of the answers for Trump:
“He won’t get along well with other countries.”
“He will deport me for being Muslim.”
“More gun violence.”
“Mass emigration.”
“Overall anarchy.”
Here are the answers for Hillary:
“She’ll open the borders for everyone.”
“Our guns will be taken away.”
“She will continue to disrespect the military.”
“Raised taxes.”
“She’ll harm the country and won’t take responsibility for it.”
“I won’t be able to afford my copays anymore because she won’t do anything to overturn ObamaCare."
I asked equal numbers of Democrats, Republicans and Independents about their fears for this presidential race; however, no matter their political party, every person I asked for their opinion told me that they will be scared in some way, shape or form for this country. Did this election set a precedent for making a mockery of democracy and the right to vote or did American learn it's lesson? Will we make a bigger effort to pick better candidates for 2020?
Many people do not want to vote because they are so against either candidate but we have to vote to honor our armed forces who have fought for democracy. Do we vote for the evil we see or the evil we don’t but know is under the surface? It’s up to us America. Whether Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump wins the election, the fate of our country hangs in the balance. No one knows what will happen on Tuesday, November 8, but we do know that our votes count so please make the right choice Americans (if there even is one), for you, your family, and your country.
