Midterms are daunting and friend drama is simply overwhelming. You feel like your life is spinning out of control and there’s nothing you can do about it. Snapping at people in your path is becoming a common occurrence. Taking time for yourself to do things that will make you happy and calm should be a priority--that way you won’t shave your head like Britney circa 2007.
Walk it Out
Fordham University students are lucky to have free access to the Botanical Gardens, also known as the Botans, right across the street. Walking the hilly paths of the Botans creates endorphins and endorphins make people happy, right Elle Woods? Peonies, daisies, roses, and ferns create a beautiful place where school doesn’t exist. Simply walking somewhere that isn’t within the gates of campus can establish some good vibes. Even though you may not have one of New York’s famously beautiful places in your backyard, find somewhere where you can escape the business of life and take a stroll.
Just Eat It
Yes, healthy foods make you feel amazing and taste good too, however, sometimes we get cravings. Sushi is my weakness. But, I found out that on those days when it feels as if nothing goes right, sushi is only a phone call away. After getting a C on that Biology midterm you studied so hard for, you feel as if nothing can go right. Food tends to help with that. If you’re feeling a little blue, treat yourself to something delicious.
Pay It Forward
Giving back to others gives you a feeling unlike any other. Whether it’s volunteering or simply paying for someone’s coffee, there are always little ways to give back. Even telling a stranger in TJ Maxx that their jacket is cute can make a difference. Your week may be the worst one you’ve had this semester, but someone else could be having the same, terrible week. Help them out and try to brighten someone else’s day. You’ll feel better and they’ll feel better. You get the best of both worlds, as Hannah Montana once said.
Shop Til’ You Drop
You’re a broke college student and you probably didn’t account for buying a new top to go out in every weekend, I get it. I’m not saying go crazy, but a Brandy Melville top here and there isn’t going to make you file for bankruptcy. When you look better, you feel better. It’s a thing. If you go out and finally get that top you’ve been eyeing for weeks, it’ll do wonders. Wearing new clothes tends to make you more confident and that confidence spreads to your attitude. Your attitude improves and things don’t seem all that bad anymore.
Be a Bookworm
There’s no better escape than escaping into a world that’s anything but your own. By emerging yourself into a book, you stop thinking about the unsettling amount of homework due tomorrow. Instead of mindlessly binge watching "Fuller House", you do something more educational and stimulating. That way, you don’t sink back into a lazy slump and are able to keep your brain active in order to jump right back into studying.
So next time you’re ready to just drop out of college and become a monk 3,000 miles away, try one of these tips instead. It’ll keep you sane, at least through this week.
