In the wake of multiple gun-related tragedies and a presidential election, gun laws have remained a hot-button topic; many United States citizens now feel the need to chime in more than ever. Traditionally, conservatives argue with power to the second amendment, while liberals believe more guns equates to more violence. Despite political party, Americans have decided that the liberal’s ideals may be onto something – saving lives.
After the deadliest mass shooting in American history, stronger alliances have formed. But it has taken too long. The conservatives interpretation of the second amendment needs to be concurrent with our modern technology along with our changing society, as a nation, since the amendment’s birth in 1791. We are no longer fighting with muskets, nor are we responsible for forming a militia, as we now have a standing military. We are responsible for being proactive consumers and lawmakers for the safety of our entire nation.
In a town hall meeting moderated by PBS, President Obama reiterated what liberals are truly standing for, in regards to gun laws:
This was stated on the first of June. Only a mere 12 days later, a person fitting the description above, walked into an Orlando night club to commit mass murder. This tragedy has unified many and has also created clear lines, of where people stand, when it comes to gun control.
Thanks to Senator Chris Murphy’s 14-hour filibuster, the Senate will now vote on two bills to combat a portion of the gun violence issue. One bill proposes the denial of gun sales to people who are, or have been, on the terror watch list. The other requires more expansive background checks for online gun purchasing.
The takeaway from tragedies, like the one in Orlando, affirm that the current gun purchasing process is flawed. And introspectively, that citizens must hinder creating laws in their own personal interest, because the majority is losing something – in this case, life.
