I think it's safe to say that Disneyland is universally loved. Disney as a whole is loved by all. The cartoons. The movies. The parks. What's not to love?
So, can someone please explain to me why the billion dollar company, which has had good ideas 90 percent of the time, is deciding to turn Tower of Terror in to a Guardians of the Galaxy ride?
In the last couple years, we've seen some drastic changes within the park that has been less favorable to some. When the 60th anniversary approached, guests witnessed the castle sparkling in diamonds, a brand new World of Color show commemorating Walt Disney's legacy. and a new parade and firework spectacular showcasing the Disney movies that have made a big impact on our lives. Some are calling it a commercial for Disneyland, some say this has been the best tribute to Walt Disney since, well, Walt Disney.
Not only that, but we've seen some really neat changes to attractions as well. Space Mountain witnessed it's first drastic refurbishment in years back when they introduced Space Mountain: Ghost Galaxy and then, last year, because of the new movie, they changed it to Hyperspace Mountain -- an updated version of the classic ride where they introduced a Star Wars feel to it. Guests are in the midst of an X-Wing battle and the ride itself got a little faster (sit in the front).
Innoventions was turned into a Marvel HQ and, as of last year for the movie, a Launch Bay for Star Wars. The bay includes a ton of props and models from the original and new trilogies.
What once used to be "Honey We Shrunk The Audience" is now "Star Wars: Path of the Jedi" -- a short film explaining the story of Star Wars.
Given the Star Wars and Marvel popularity, it's clear that Disney likes to adapt it into the parks, yes? Well, they shouldn't. Now they've decided to turn Tower of Terror into a Guardians of the Galaxy ride focused on The Collector. Not sure what kind of plot they plan on implementing into the ride, but to be honest, it's completely unnecessary.
I agree wholeheartedly when Walt Disney said that Disneyland would never be complete. It'll always be changing. Walt's initial concept and eventual execution of the park was perfect, albeit a disastrous opening day. Fantasyland was based off the the movies that he created. Frontierland was based of the westerns he loved to watch. Tomorrowland was something special he thought of. He was a futurologist and his concept of Tomorrowland was what he envisioned for the future. Granted, that may have been butchered with Star Wars and Marvel HQ.
Let's jump to California Adventure. This wasn't Walt's handling. This was a bunch of Disney executives back in 1995 pitching an idea that was well built but wasn't satisfactory among guests. Well founded. It felt like a dull version of a California Park and was missing a slight Disney feel. What I will hand to them is how much the park did feel like California. They had the boardwalk, Redwood Creek, and a Hollywood back lot. Three years after the park opened, Tower of Terror opened in the back lot and brought a 1920's Hollywood feel with reign of terror. The ride itself opened ten years prior in Walt Disney World and became a very quick favorite.
Now, Disney has decided they want to implement Guardians of the Galaxy into it and, in my opinion, takes away what Disney stood for. Why?
Disney was imaginative. He was creative. He made a mouse become an icon among families all over. When he opened Disneyland, he didn't want every ride to be based off a movie. He had a specific idea in mind when he created the park and what he wanted the park to become. Personally, I think Walt might be rolling in his grave right now with how his park has been handled. I understand new things must come and change will happen, but changing an iconic ride for something that people don't even want? Kind of cheap and lazy in my opinion. Revamping a ride is one thing. Changing the content and integrity of it is another.
There's already a petition out to stop Disney from going through with it. This is one of the few times I'm actually mad about a change in Disneyland Park and am willing to sign a petition. Follow this link if you agree.
