Why I'm Tired of Being A Millennial

Isn't that what I'm supposed to be anyways? Tired?

Why I'm Tired of Being A Millennial
Eva Amble

"This place is perfect for you Millennials!"

"Oh, I'm sure you Millennials love this.."

"Only Millennials like this."

"We have to change our work systems according to the millennials rising up."

Get the picture?

In today's world, we seemed to be hung up on labels. You're a democrat, you're a republican, you're a millennial, you're generation X or the baby boomers. You're a wizard Harry!! We take pride in what we are, most of the time we are more concerned on what we are than who. We use our labels to our advantage. We expect people to know things about us based on our labels. For instance, being a millennial, we are usually more tech savvy than any other generation. Therefore, we automatically believe that grandpa can't possibly know his phone better than we know ours, and most of the time we're probably right. We are almost offended when we are not asked to help someone with their electronic. And the list goes on...

I for one, am tired of being a millennial. Because with being a millennial I am constantly labeled as lazy, entitled and essentially "no good for jobs these days." While applying for internships I have found that employers either want to fill their offices with millennials or they want nothing to do with them at all.

Isn't it sad that we have drug our generation's name and stereotype completely through the mud? We have ruined our name because we are too entitled and lazy to get off our butts and work for something we want. It's hard for me because I was raised by two non-millennials. Who taught me the value of having a healthy work ethic, a sense of establishment and a humble mind to keep me going. "Nothing will ever be handed to you on a silver platter Hannah." My dad used to tell me this all the time. In life, nothing is free. Even the "free" isn't free.

So what is it that makes us this way? Are we born with this sense of entitlement? Or is it formed? Is it nature? Or is it nurture? I am a millennial and I for one am so tired of that label. I am tired of being lumped in with the rest of the generation. It's like saying "All republicans are white, redneck, gun-loving-men." or "All democrats are Pro-choice, dumb and rude." It's not morally right, and it certainly isn't true. We've decided due to a collection of people that all of those people within that collection must all think, act and be the same way. When this is almost never the case.

I am a millennial. I am someone who takes pride in their work, someone who doesn't expect to be handed something on a platter of any color, and a person who will do whatever job I am given with excellence. I am not lazy, I actually work better when I am busy, and I certainly do not believe that just because I may know more technological things than the generations before me, does not make me any smarter than anyone else in the room. I am a millennial and I am tired of being judged based on this stereotype.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
