Everyone knows the uncomfortable feeling of being in a roomful of people you don't know. After moving 15 times in the few years I've been alive, I've picked up on some important skills that have helped me fit in and make friends within mere days of being in a new town.

1) Have a Friendly Demeanor

You wouldn't befriend someone who looks mean, so why would anyone else? In order to make yourself more approachable, be relaxed and try to keep a smile on your face. It will make the people that you socialize with more comfortable and increase the chances of people befriending you.

2) Introduce Yourself

This one might seem really obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people don't introduce themselves when they meet someone new. If you tell someone your name, it leaves a lasting impression and they're less likely to forget you.

3) Ask Questions

You don't have to go over the top and sound like a stalker, but asking people questions when you meet them is an important social skill that is often overlooked. By nature, people love to talk about themselves, so they'll be more fond of you if you give them that opportunity. Listen attentively, smile, and nod.

4) Bond Over Common Grounds

This one relates back to number three. If you hear the person say something you can relate to, let them know! People love people who have things in common with them, because it makes them feel comfortable and understood. Plus, you might find someone who relates to you in ways no one else has before.

5) Make Plans

Whether they're hypothetical or literal, making plans with people you meet will help your social life greatly. People will be more inclined to invite you to social events if you do this. For example, let's say you meet someone new (for the sake of the example, we'll call him Stewart) and bond over your love for Science Fiction movies. You decide that you must go see a Science Fiction movie together. The next week, Stewart gets invited to see Star Trek with a large group. Now, because you two made those plans, Stewart is more likely to invite you to join him. This not only allows you to bond further with Stewart, but also helps you meet more people.

There you have it! Those are five tips that have helped me to make numerous friends quickly, no matter where I am.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
