For the past two weeks, Donald Trump has begun to announce his picks for Trump Administration posts. For those of us at college, who are constantly told that employers are looking for experience, Donald Trump is proving to us that we are being lied to. Some of his announced picks have no experience in field that their nomination is in.
Nikki Haley is the current Republican governor from the state of South Carolina. Donald Trump has proposed her name for nomination to the office of United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Before Nikki Haley became the Governor of South Carolina, she was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. Before that, she worked for her mother's company. In neither role has she had any experience with international affairs. Her undergraduate degree is in accounting.
There is a theory floating around that Donald Trump only nominated Nikki Haley to help the Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina. Nikki Haley was a vocal Trump critic while the Lieutenant Governor was a fan of Trump's run for the presidency. By nominating Haley, the Lieutenant Governor, Henry McMaster, will assume the Governorship of South Carolina which gives him a platform.
Donald Trump has tapped Representative Mike Pompeo to serve as the Director of the CIA. The only experience that Pompeo has in national security is serving on the dubious House Select Committee on Benghazi. While Pomeo does have military experience, it is important to note that Military and Intelligence experience are two completely different things.
Another nomination that should cause concern is Betsy Devos to be Secretary of Education. Devos is a school voucher advocate who has no experience in public schools. Public schools are an important staple of American life and we need to make sure the "head teacher" also values that notion of importance as well.
[At the time of publication of this article, there are still conflicting reports at whether or not Dr. Ben Carson has accepted the position of Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. It is quite obvious that Dr. Carson's expertise is in medicine and not housing policy or urban development.]
So for us college kids, toss out your resumes and cover letters. Make friends with people at the places you want to work. The next leader of the free world is telling us that friendships are the way to get hired.
