Many people have their views about Greek life and the stereotypes that come along with joining but, no one really knows what it's like until you join. Honestly, I do not consider myself a sorority girl or someone that has many girls that are friends. In high school I was the girl that did her own thing and did not care about what other people thought about her. As I came into my freshman year of college last year I did not think I would join a sorority. All I knew about sororities and Greek life were the stereotypes that came along with them and that were portrayed in popular social media and Hollywood movies. I went into recruitment weekend with an open mind and told myself if I didn't like it then I did not have to join. I did not want to be constrained by the stereotypes that came with being in a sorority. But, after joining Kappa Alpha Theta I knew these stereotypes were wrong and I can prove how different Greek life actually is.
Myth #1
"All we do is party and drink"
This cannot be further from the truth. The girls in my sorority are involved in so many organizations around campus and play multiple sports. When I joined Theta I found girls that are involved in sports (track, softball, volleyball), marching band, Habitat for Humanity, Student Volunteer Bureau, academic societies, student senate, choir, and many other clubs and organizations. These girls have showed me dedication to a variety of different things and have broke this stereotype.
Myth #2
"You are just paying for your friends"
Our relationships do not end after graduation. Many Thetas that have graduated come back and connect with new members. This connection is huge when applying for jobs and graduate school because Thetas will connect with you and help you find a job and apply to graduate school. My pledge class has also become very close because I've gone through everything with them. I learned to love all of my sisters and they will be for life. They're not just friends but family.
Myth #3
"Greek Life is a popularity contest"
Many people assume that to get a bid you have to be the cutest and most popular girl but, this is not true. When going through recruitment the girls that get bids are the ones that can be seen in the house and will add to the values of Kappa Alpha Theta. You can't buy yourself into a house just because you are popular; it is more than just looks and popularity. The recruitment process is used to determine which girls would best fit in the sorority. Popularity has nothing to do with recruitment.
By joining the Pi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta, I came to realize that the stereotypes of joining a sorority are beyond false and I challenge people who are considering Greek life to find out for yourself what comes along with it. Do me a favor and help break these stereotypes!
