I'd say that I speak for most when I say that I am absolutely obsessed with Pinterest. Don't lie, because we all know that you have a Pinterest board with over 100 pins that are all dedicated to college, college hacks, college decor, and tons of various college-related things. I am all for using Pinterest for various aspects of your life; however, I feel that using it for college can lead to a quite misleading experience. Although I wish that Pinterest could tell you everything about college and life in general, that is unfortunately not the case and there are tons of things Pinterest doesn't tell you college ...
1. Only half of what you pack will really be used.
I hate to break it to you, but those ultimate college packing lists are the ultimate guide to a cluttered, busting at the seams dorm room. To be completely honest, those lists are filled with more than 50 percent of stuff that you definitely don't need. When packing for college, you really don't need to follow a pre-made packing list. The most efficient way to pack for college is to simply make your own list of things that you use for everyday life, and then make sure to take into account the things that your parents provide for you. It's not like you are never going to set foot in your home again so you definitely don't need to pack like it is.
2. Studying is not as easy as it seems.
Those study hack pins are pretty handy, but let me just tell you that they are not exactly the most effective. Yes, placing candy on your textbook in order to make you want to actually read it may seem like a good idea, but it's really not. I'm not even going to go into how unsanitary that is, but coming from someone who loves candy as much as I do, you are just going to eat the candy and still not read. It's as simple as that, studying is not a simple task that can be achieved through three easy steps. My best advice is to just suck it up, remember that you are paying thousands of dollars for this education, and just study.
3. Dressing up will never be a voluntary option.
Remember all of those cute outfit ideas you found? Well they may be cute, but chances are you will never actually wear any of them. While I am by no means trying to advocate for the stereotypical sweatpants and t-shirts college wardrobe, I am telling you that it's hard to resist and you will more than likely find yourself wearing it constantly. My advice would be to ditch those outfit guides, and just dress in a way that is comfortable and suitable for you (as long as it includes sweatpants ... just saying it's pretty great).
4. All of those decorations are unnecessary.
I am completely with you in that I have so many dorm decorations pinned to my college board at the moment, but the reality is that I will never need or even make all of them. I know that they are all cute and you could never imagine yourself being able to choose just a few, but I promise you will thank me later when you are moving out of your dorm. The truth is that too many decorations in your dorm room will actually make it look really cluttered and even tacky so just choose a few key decor pieces to make your dorm more like home. From the personal experience of watching friends struggle to pack up their dorms, too many decorations equals even more stress and frustration during move out time, and that is the last thing you need at a time like that.
5. College is hard, but worth it.
No amount of Pinterest pins will tell you about the best times that you will have in college. Whether it is going to Walmart at midnight to get ice cream or just staying up until 2 a.m. contemplating life with your roommate. It will also never tell you about some of the hardest times you will have. While everything may not go the way you want sometimes, you will have some of the best times in college. Yes, college is a place for getting an education, but that doesn't mean that you can't have fun while doing it. So take a step back from Pinterest, and just experience it through your own eyes. Pinterest will never be able to give you the friends, memories, lessons, and experiences that college does so take advantage of it and enjoy!
