A name is more than just a collection of letters put together into something you are called. It is more than a convenience that allows us to communicate with each other. Names are what identify us. They are a significant aspect of every culture all around the world. A name has the power to awe, confuse, please, or disappoint people. A grandmother will either be please or disappointed that you did not name your newborn daughter after her sister, aunt, or cousin. A name is not just a meaningless label, it is part of everyday life. Names shape people, are one of the first words that we learn how to say as babies, and give kids fun little license plates they can stick onto their bikes.
Unfortunately for me, there was never a bike license plate, a keychain, or a mug engraved with my name. I have met many people with the same name as me, but never have I met someone with the same spelling.
What can I say about my name? It was given to me by my parents when I was born. It tells you the first think you ever get to know about me.
Many people often ask me why my name is spelled the way it is. Some compliment me on the odd spelling, and others think it's unusual or strange. I go by Matti, but my full name is Mattison. Not the typical way of spelling it, but to me it is normal.
I was named after three people. My great-grandfather's last name was Mattison, as well as my grandmother's maiden name. I love being so closely and effortlessly connected with my family. Because of the name I was given, I feel closer to the ones that I never got to spend much time with, but who have been a huge part of my life just by sharing their names.
I believe names have more power than we give them credit for. Whatever your parents name you, you will live with for the rest of your life. Whether you like it or not, your name is what you were given at birth and what you'll be forever. There is no changing it, except by a lengthy legal process.
Take a moment and try and count how many times someone will call your name in your life. It's difficult to even estimate. That is how important your name truly is. It's used every day, multiple times a day.
My name distinguishes me from everyone else on the planet. I consider myself lucky to have a name with such peculiar spelling, but someone with a common name is just as lucky. No matter the rarity, your name is unique to who you are.
My friends call me Matti, but I will always be Mattison. Be proud of your name, and love it. It's the only one you have!
