A lot of people seem to spend the other seasons of the year just waiting for summer. They want to visit beaches and water parks, get that perfect sun-kissed look, and show off their summer bodies. I am not one of those people. I am currently lying in bed with my sweats on hoping it cools down this evening to a temperature that’s more reasonable for heat-weary people like me. I hate the summer and its heat for a number of reasons.
I dislike sweating, and as I have always been one of those girls whose thighs always touch, I find anything other than longer shorts, capris, or jeans to completely unacceptable if I want to be comfortable. Also, if you have never experienced wearing a bra in the summer heat, you have no idea of the horrors of sweat in certain areas of the body. And as a person with pretty thick hair and an aversion to doing anything with it, summer is the awful period of the year when I have to think about ponytails and buns every day to combat neck sweat. Unfortunately though, there’s nothing I can do short of shaving my hair off to keep my head from overheating under all my hair.
Summertime means bugs, and I don’t like bugs. Also, have you ever noticed how hard it is to get flies to leave you alone when you’ve been sweating in the summer heat all day? It’s difficult, in case you didn’t know. Now, in Western Washington, where I live, our selection of bugs isn’t quite as broad as it is in other places. But, I argue that our flies, mosquitoes, and spiders are aware of the lack of other more interesting bugs in the area and make up for that with an incredible amount of tenacity and creativity.
Two words: Outdoor. Chores. Growing up on a farm, I have come to dread the chores that become necessary in the summer because there are some things that just can’t be done when it’s sleeting in December. Chief among these is haying, and while I have always been proud of the work I can do in this department, that doesn’t mean I enjoy it. I have horrendous allergies to one of the main grasses used in hay, which makes it really difficult to handle it for more than a few hours without becoming a wreck.
While these are only a few of the reasons I find the summer to be a poor excuse for a good time, I think these are also some of the most relatable. If you too find the summer months lacking in comfort and fun, this article is for you. Those of us who like the other seasons best and loathe summer must stick together to wait out the summer until the fall comes around to bring its cooler temperatures, falling leaves, and refreshing rainfall.
