There's something exceptional about being able to call yourself a student at or an alum of the University of Kentucky. UK allows students from all over the world to come together and unite in one thing: a love for the Big Blue Nation. Here in the Bluegrass, we have horses, Kentucky basketball, bourbon and much more. Here are the ABCs of being a Kentucky Wildcat.
A: Athletics
The UK Cheerleading Squad alone has won UCA's National College Cheerleading Championship 21 times. We even have the CATSPY Awards every year to mimic the ESPYS where every athlete on campus is rewarded for their many athletic achievements.
B: Basketball
University of Kentucky's basketball program led by Coach Cal... need I say more? The NBA has us to thank.
C: Caturdays
Tailgating in the bowl, throwing up a "Cats by 90" hand to your face, wearing a UK-blue dress with cowgirl boots and a glass of bourbon and coke in your hand. The Kentucky way.
D: Drake's fandom
Can you say you have Drake as a die-hard fan of your school's basketball team? We can.
E: Enormous water balloon fight during K-Week
K-Week welcomes all new and returning students to campus with one of the best events of the year – a huge water balloon fight with about 200,00 water balloons and 10,000 students at the Johnson Center fields.
F: Fall in the Bluegrass
Arguably the best scenery to see Fall weather is in Kentucky. Beautiful trees line our campus walkways making the busy months of October and November a little more bearable.
G: Gatton
The Gatton College of Business and Economics is set apart on campus because of its incredibly modern infrastructure and lecture halls. I've considered becoming a business major because of it... not to be dramatic or anything.
H: Horses
The horses that run along our never-ending picket fences are very unique to our area. Not to mention the Kentucky Derby and how it's basically our end-of-the-year celebration that we look forward to after our final exams in the Spring.
I: Ingles and the other dorms from the 1960s
My friend gave me a shirt the other day that had a picture of Kirwan tower on it and the dates of its survival beneath it. Am I seriously wearing a shirt that is remembering a... dorm? The answer is yes, because it's a UK landmark. RIP Kirwan and the other 1960s buildings that are now abandoned.
J: Jimmy John's
Whether you're sick of eating dining hall food, hungry at a tailgate or stuck studying in the library all day, Jimmy John's speedy quick delivery is the actual real deal.
K: Keeneland
Do I have classes on Fridays? Not in October and April. Hello, Keeneland and hello, betting.
L: Library (Willy T.)
The greatest college campus library in the States, hands down. Whether is 3 p.m. or 3 a.m., expect to always see a friend working (or talking) in Willy T.'s 5-floor library.
M: Marathon For The Kids – DanceBlue
One of the largest philanthropy events in the SEC that raises over one-million dollars each year For The Kids in a 24-hour dance marathon. What's a better way to give back as a school community?
N: Non-stop construction
As cool as UK is, they're always trying to make it even cooler by adding and adding and adding to the school. While this may be extremely worth it in the end, it's a pain in the butt now for students swerving in and out of construction sites.
O: Obnoxious UF and UL hate
Gator roasts during football season and Ls down during basketball season. Cats by 90.
P: Parking
You're either stuck walking 30 minutes to K-Lot to get your car in the dead of night, walking back to see your car have a boot or a ticket on the front or panicking because there's absolutely no place to park on campus whatsoever. Let's just say I've learned to walk.
Q: Quizlet
The ultimate survival guide. The quickest form of a flashcard that's accessible on your phone and your laptop when you're last minute studying before your exam.
R: Rupp and their soft serve
I may be bias, but Rupp is the prettiest basketball arena that I've ever been in. Not to mention the delicious soft serve that you can enjoy with it.
S: State Street
Possibly the greatest way to celebrate a team's victory: burning couches (or anything else you see) on State Street lined by at least 200 SWAT officers with shields guarding themselves from the chaos. #MarchMadness
T: Tacos from Local
If you're coming to Lexington for the first time, Local Taco will always be one of the top 3 recommendations for where to eat.
U: Utmost confusion when people tell you which part of Kentucky they're from
Person A: "Where are you from?"
Person B: "Cincinnati"
A: "Oh, so like downtown?"
B: "No...it's Northern Kentucky"
V: Very competitive sorority girls competing at Greek Sing
You know when you see girls running around campus pushing other girls out of their way for spirit points that it's time for Greek Sing. But, the actual show is incredible, so coping a ticket is a necessity.
W: Whitehall
The broken-down stalls and and the outdated classrooms are really what make this classroom building so iconic. After three flights of stairs, though, you really wish your class had been scheduled somewhere else.
X: Xtremely tall office tower otherwise known as P.O.T.
Don't ever go to a maze, just come here. If you can successfully find your T.A. or professor on the right floor in the correct numbered and lettered room, props to you.
Y: Yearly camp-outs for Big Blue Madness
You never truly see the craziness of Kentucky basketball fans until tickets to BBM are about to go up for grabs. Tents everywhere for three days doesn't stop us.
Z: Zero sleep
There's too much to do when you're a student at the University of Kentucky, so no time for sleep. But, it's totally worth it.
Being a student at the University of Kentucky is one of the best things you can say. So, for those of you searching for a school, this is the place to be. As for those who have already graduated, don't you wish you never took any of this for granted?: Zero sleep
