Because Moana is life and so is procrastinating.

The 5 Stages Of Pulling An All-Nighter As Told By Moana

Recently I've found myself procrastinating a lot and having to pull a few all-nighters. They're terrible and easily avoidable, but I've already pulled two this semester. The good news is the work gets done and turned in on time. The bad news is I'm dead afterward. Literally I procrastinated writing this, but then I was inspired by the Moana soundtrack.

Here are the 5 stages of pulling an all-nighter: Moana edition.

8:00 p.m.

Denial. Everything is going to be fine. I can do this in like an hour. I just need to do it, that's all. I'll be in bed before midnight, for sure. I'll take a quick nap and no one will know the difference. In Moana, she denies that the water is calling her and pretends that she doesn't need to be in it. She tries to please her father by staying away from the water, but she also spends time with her grandmother who stays close to it.

10:00 p.m.

Acceptance. Okay I've got to get busy. If I get started now, I'll be done by 2am and still get some rest. Like Moana, "If I go there's just no telling how far I'll go." Moana realizes that she loves her island and her people, but she wants to be on the water. The hit song, "How Far I'll Go," describes her decision to get a boat and leave. She was chosen by the ocean to save her island, so she decides she has to leave it in order to save it.

12:00 a.m.

Freak out. Okay this is literally due today, and I'm not even half way through? What do I do now? I'm exhausted, but I'm no where near finished. Moana almost dies like 10 million times. It doesn't help that Maui throws her overboard 8 million of those times. She almost drowns and feels helpless a lot, but she pushes through and the water helps her.

4:00 a.m.

Go time. I most definitely took a nap and still only have half a paper. Now I have to really crunch. When Maui leaves Moana to face Taka alone, she pulls herself together and heads into battle. Like Moana, I am a strong woman who can handle anything in my path. Moana is honestly so inspiring, and I don't know what we did to deserve this movie.

8:00 a.m.

Class time. No sleep, no problem. I just wrote that paper in like 4 hours. The sun is out and life is good. Now I have to print it out and go to class. At the end of Moana, the heart is restored and all the islands come back to life. Moana returns home to her family, and they all become wayfinders again.

It's amazing what you can do in one night. It's also amazing what Disney can create. I am amazed by Moana almost as much as I ruin my life by procrastinating everything. If you haven't seen it yet, it's a must see! Come by my house, and I'll watch it with you.

Don't be like me. Face your assignments head on and get them done early.

All my love,

Shan

P.S. You're welcome

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
