An Open Letter To My College

An Open Letter To My College

My acceptance letter came, now what? Everything was about to change and I had to adapt. Walking into my dorm for the first time, I was an equal mix of excited and nervous for what was to come. When classes began and my new routine became set in place, I soon realized this is where I am supposed to be. The friends I have made here are life long connections and the experiences I've already had are memories I will never forget. So to my college, thank you.

Thank you for being my home away from home.

When I miss my mom more than I know how to, I have people who are here for me to talk to. When classes get too overwhelming, there are many resources for me to cling to. The friends I have made here are the exact people I need in my life and the ones who are there for me. This place may not be the small town I came from, but it is a great place to learn and to develop.

Thank you for giving me the opportunities you have.

Though obviously the opportunity to learn is the number one reason I chose my school, it is not the only one I have gotten. I have gained the opportunity to be more independent and to grow as a person. I have been able to join in on events around campus and I have gotten to know my new friends as well as some of the most amazing professors who are employed here.

Thank you for the people you have brought into my life.

I don't just mean the obvious friends you make at college that become family. Thank you for the professors who go beyond anything I could have ever expected not only in the classroom but outside of it. Thank you for the workers in the dining hall and the grocery here on campus who make it their job to know my name and remember things about me when I come in. Thank you for the admin of my department who is always willing to help me with anything and everything I need.

Thank you for my future.

Thank you for the degree I will be able to receive when I leave here. The degree that will make a name for myself and will lead me to the job I want and the life I have always imagined. Without you college, I would not have the future I have always dreamed of. Thank you for showing me hard work and the reward that comes with it.

Gratefully yours,

A Thankful Student

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
