Working Retail As Told By 'The Office'

The time between fall and spring semester is a break for school, typically used for spending time with family, catching up with old friends and for many students, going back to their hometown jobs. As young college students, with virtually no skills, most of us are stuck with the less than appealing retail jobs. And as anyone in retail knows, the holidays are a very busy time that our friends from “The Office” can understand.

Michael Scott knows what it's like to wake up the morning of your first day back and have to kiss your free time goodbye.

Or when you work a double shift, and someone asks how you are doing.

We all know that feeling when that one coworker starts trying to tell you how to do your job.

And then that moment when your boss asks you if you want to work an extra shift.

When you start thinking about going back to school where you will be away from this job and reunited with all of your friends.

How we all feel when a customer walks in five minutes before it is time to close.

Or even worse, the face you make when it is time for you to clock out, but a customer stops you to ask for help.

Michael knows the thoughts you have when your store has an after Christmas sale on December 26, and you have to open.

Kevin understands our frustrations when a customer tries to convince you to take their coupon that expired in 2011.

He also knows what we truly want when we begin to daydream instead of doing the job that we are paid to do.

And everyone knows the feeling you get when you worked all day, the customers were rude to you, your boss yelled at you, but you still have to remember who you are.

And then, finally, Stanley knows the relief you feel when you finish your last day of work before heading back to school.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
