Neyland Stadium is an electric atmosphere on Saturday's in the fall. Here are ten facts that you may not know about one of the most traditional stadiums in the country.
1. Neyland Stadium is the third largest non-racing stadium in the United States, the sixth largest non-racing stadium in the world and the largest stadium in the SEC.
2. At one point, Neyland Stadium could hold 104,079 (it now holds 102,455). It was slightly reduced after alterations.
3. The largest attendance ever recorded in Neyland Stadium was 109,061 on Sept. 18, 2004 when Tennessee defeated Florida 30-28.
4. Tennessee's all-time record at Neyland Stadium is 450-116-17.
5. In May 1970, Neyland Stadium was used to host the Billy Graham Crusade where Richard Nixon was a guest speaker.
6. When Neyland Stadium first opened in 1921, it held 3,200 people.
7. The field at Neyland Stadium was originally grass and then it was switched to AstroTurf from 1968 to 1993. Since 1994, Shields-Watkins field has been grass.
8. Neyland Stadium was originally named Shields-Watkins field. The name changed in 1962 in honor of Tennessee's legendary head coach, General Robert Neyland. The official name is now Neyland Stadium, Shields-Watkins Field.
9. The first game played at Neyland Stadium was on Oct. 20, 1962 against Alabama.
10. Neyland Stadium has previously hosted NFL exhibition games. The most recent was in 1995, when the Houston Oilers played the Washington Redskins.
