Gorgeous, goofy, and fierce- these are the words that I think of when I hear the name Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift has made it clear to the world that she is on her way to becoming one of the most famous women in the music industry. Her songs have captivated us since 2006 when she released "Teardrops On My Guitar," and every pubescent girl in America sang along crying in their bedroom. Since then, she has gone from country to pop and released some of the most well-known songs in the industry including, "Shake it Off," "Blank Space," and "Bad Blood." However, Taylor is so much more than just a singer and songwriter- she is an activist for other musicians.
Earlier in the month, Fortune released its Most Powerful Women List. Taylor, among 50 other women, made the list based on credentials such as her company's profits and revenue in 2014. Fortune credited her stunt back in June when she "refused to put her music on Spotify," and then "forced Apple Music to change the way it compensated musicians during its trial period. [Taylor] shifted the power dynamic back to the artists." Swift received a great amount of criticism through social media by being accused of being too greedy. However, she expressed that while she does not need the money, many new and struggling artists do, and they deserve to be recognized for their talents and hard work through financial compensation.
Fortune briefly acknowledged Swift becoming "an increasingly vocal advocate for female empowerment." Swift is known for using her platform to encourage young girls to follow their dreams and to demand change in today's society. She believes in the equality of both sexes in terms of social, political, legal, and economic rights. Most widely known, Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" music video screams feminism. What's better than a group of girls of all ages and races wearing leather outfits and holding guns while fire blazes around them? The music video defies the stereotypes of women being weak and vulnerable and portrayed her all-female cast being strong and fierce. Taylor has shown that she is giving the industry a run for their money by not holding anything back.
Taylor Swift most definitely deserved to make Fortune's Most Powerful Women List. Besides her obvious wealth, Taylor has used her talent and success to be so much more than 'just another celebrity.' She has become a role model for young girls as well as aspiring musicians. She demands justice in every aspect of the world and for that, she is most deserving of this award.
