How To Survive The Rest Of The Semester

No need for those second semester blues!

It's finally come to that point in the first semester; Halloween is over and it's teachers' favorite time to cram in as many projects and exams as possible before the end of the semester. Even though I myself am trying to figure out how to miraculously overcome this seemingly universal problem, here are my most helpful hints on how to survive the rest of the semester.

1. Make lists

Making lists can sound tedious and overrated, but it actually makes me feel less stressed. Also, there is no better feeling than crossing off an item off a list.

2. Write down dates

When it's August, the November midterm seems years away, but now it's right around the corner. I have a master calendar on my desk and once I get a syllabus, I write down dates right away. This way, (hopefully) nothing creeps up on you too much.

3. Make a Plan and Prioritize

After you have a list of things you should do, make sure to prioritize and do what needs to be done first. Even if you have a paper due in three weeks that is stressing you out, try to still focus on that exam you have tomorrow.

4. (No) Days Off

Not everyday should be super stressful, so make a plan to figure out the best days to get work done and the best days to go and have fun or watch Netflix all day. The last thing you want is to miss a tailgate, because you didn't study for Econ yet.

5. Have goals

For me, if I don't have a final goal for the day, like taking two chapters of notes or making a study guide, then I don't have a lot of motivation to work and finish projects.

6. Have incentives

Incentives can be small, like having a cookie after you finish studying or big like going out after you finish your goal. Personally, I hate taking notes, so I put pieces of candy after each 5 pages to keep me motivated to reading.

7. Give yourself a break

Try not to be hard on yourself, because school can be hard. It's okay if you don't get the ideal grades you want, because as long as you have a desire to learn, then you'll do just great.

8. You're sooo close

Only a few more weeks until Thanksgiving, and a little bit longer until winter break. You can do it!

9. Mor study time=more party time

Party time.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
