I've always known texting and driving was bad. Every time I drive back to college from being at home for the weekend, the last thing my mom tells me is "Don't text and drive, keep your eyes on the road. I love you!" Yes, I myself am guilty of texting and driving at times. But it wasn't until a recent tragedy in my hometown that really was an eye opener to me. It showed that taking your eyes off the road for just a split second can cause an accident. Not only does texting and driving cause accidents, but it can cause deaths. Not only can texting and driving cause deaths, but it can take a loved one away from a precious, loving family.
“The only time you should text and drive is when what you have to say is more important than your very life.” ~ Anonymous
Here are 5 ways to prevent texting and driving:
1. Put away your phone while driving. Out of sight, out of mind.
2. Download the Wonder App on your phone. This app protects the drivers. It allows other users with the app too see when their text will be a distraction.
3. If you must use your phone, set up a wireless or bluetooth device that allows you to talk hands free.
4. By not texting, you're preventing yourself from getting a ticket. Texting and driving is illegal in many cities. So if you don't text, you won't get pulled over.
5. JUST DON'T DO IT.
My deepest condolences go out to the families in Laredo, Texas that were affected by this recent tragedy. Two ladies lost their lives that day and one is still in the hospital, due to a driver that was not alert and was texting and driving. I hope that this accident is not only an eye opener to me, but to all of my friends, classmates, family members, and everyone reading this. Nothing good comes from texting and driving. So just remember next time you want to text and drive think of the consequences that will come with it.
