Spring fever (noun): the restlessness and excitement felt at the beginning of spring.
Did Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow this year? Pretty sure he sees his shadow every year which always means six more weeks of winter for us humans.
The Washington, DC weather forecast is playing with our minds as we eagerly anticipate the arrival of spring. One day it will be 60 degrees, the next day snow, two days later freezing rain, then warm and sunny again, it goes on. On those warm days, I can't help but dream of simpler times when midterms are a distant memory and I can freely sit on a frat porch drinking a summer shandy.
Everything feels better in the spring: we shed our winter coats for sundresses, it's formal season and summer is so close we can taste it. The cherry blossoms are blooming, the pools are opening and spring break (the best time for a college student) has arrived. My south Florida roots draw me to the water, especially when it's warm enough to make me dream of sipping daiquiris in the Gulf of Mexico. No one panic, but spring break is only two weeks away (struggling to contain my excitement).
I know we're all getting sick and tired of wearing pants and having responsibilities. We've watched all the Netflix imaginable as a result of being eternally trapped inside. We cannot wait until we can trade our boots for flip flops and winter hats for baseball caps. Mother Nature, we're definitely ready for spring.
Spring fever has us neglecting our papers in favor of ordering swimsuits online and wishing our professors would notice how checked out we are and take it easy on us. It is proven that sunlight increases your energy, and after being trapped inside for months hiding from the cold, we are ready to be free to roam in the sunshine. We're ready to get off the treadmills in favor of running on the National Mall and to break out our fanny packs for frat philanthropy field days.
It remains unclear as to whether or not this coming week of 60 degree weather is a tease or if spring is finally here to stay. With the sun shining, outside adventures are becoming far more important to me than my Comparative Politics midterm and the three papers I have due this week. I'll just continue to stare out the window while trapped inside the Academic Center, dreaming of being carefree instead of analyzing French literature. Less striving for As, more Vitamin C is my current motto.
For now, I'll sit cuddled under my blanket in my dorm, ready to switch out the heat for air conditioning and break out the jean shorts.
