The Spokane Summer Bucket List

What to do between those summer classes and the 80 degree weather

So you're staying in Spokane for the summer. Maybe it's because you're taking extra classes to get ahead or because you're trying to fit in a few too many extra minors or concentrations, or you just plain don't want to go anywhere else. Between the classes and 80 degree weather, you'll have to fill your time some how.

1. Greenbluff

We all know their pumpkin donuts and apple picking in October, but this summer try out the strawberry, peach, and cherry season celebrations!

2. Go river rafting

Less than an hour from Spokane there's white river rafting for you adventurous types, and wine and bird-watching rafting if that's more your style.

3. Take a day trip to Coeur d' Alene

Maybe it won't be as 90s as that, but nothing beats a warm day at the beach.

4. Go to Manito Park

If you're like me you didn't know that Spokane was the lilac city until you saw the snapchat geotag, well those lilacs bloom in the late spring and early summer so now you'll have the chance to see what that's all about!

5. Play in Hoopfest

Be a part of the biggest 3-on-3 basketball tournament on earth.

6. Eat a whole lot of ice cream

From brain freeze to scoop Spokane has some wonderful ice cream shops, but you will have to do several taste tests at each before you can really decide which one is your favorite.

7. Take yourself on a dinner date

Having so many people leaving Spokane for the summer, they say campus can feel pretty lonely. So when you start feeling like that just treat yourself to one of Spokane's best restaurants.

9. Go to the lantern festival

Have a tangled moment for yourself

10. Go stargazing

You don't have to get too far outside Spokane to see some beautiful night skies: Palouse Falls Park and Mount Spokane are both great locations far away from the city lights but not too far of a drive.

11. Go picnic and people watch at Riverfront Park

Sometimes we forgot how cool the site of the '74 worlds fair is. It's no space needle, but people watching in good weather with a good picnic basket is not a bad way to spend your day.

12. The Gondolas

After you're done people watching, go be a tourist for the day and see the views from the Gondolas.

13. Have a party in college hall

Okay, maybe you can't have a real party but with way fewer students competing for study space you can pretty much have the whole building to yourself (and if you did have a solo dance party, nobody would judge).

14. Go on SO MANY hikes

Spokane's motto is "Near nature, near perfect" and while the second part might still be up for debate, the nature part is true- so take advantage!

15. "Don't" jump off this bridge

Because it's "illegal" and "unsafe"

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
