A guitarist's technique in creating music.

When people ask me how I am able to write songs and play the guitar, I always answer with my love for singing and the feeling I get when I play Avery, my guitar. I can't really explain where I draw my inspiration from, I can only say that I am in a different world when I am singing and playing at the same time. The feeling is unreal and after I answer this question, it remains open ended and people never really understand. So I want to explain how I am able to write a simple song, with the simple chords, to create a complex work of art and my passion!

I have played the guitar for five years, and I write my own songs with my own music that go along with the lyrics. I've familiarized myself with the basic chords in standard G tuning and that is G, Em, C and D. If not all, most of my songs are written with these chords. I usually begin strumming these chords in that order: G, Em, C and D, and then I would add lyrics on top of that. Doing it this way has always been easier for me and has made songwriting fun and exciting.

After I've set up my chords for the verses, I usually work on the chorus of the song also known as the reprise, and I would change the order of the chords I used for my verses. For example, if I used G, Em, C and D (in that order) for my verse, I will change it up and go to C, D, Em, G. Doing it this way allows me to smoothly transition into the chorus, keeping the same notes and remaining in the same key.

After I transition into the chorus, I always aim to make my bridge a bit different. So I usually go into an Am, C, G or D chord. Doing this is a lot of fun because it sounds different, but it is the excellent transition to make when attempting a smooth chord progression. I never fret over finding the right words to add to the bridge because I usually sing something that will enhance the message of the song. So I go into something a bit more dramatic and it is an excellent time to do a chord change.

After I sing my bridge I usually go back to the chorus and I repeat it about two times, changing the dynamics of my vocal range and strength. Learning to sing and play the guitar has always been challenging because it is difficult to sing and play an instrument at the same time. These struggles have enabled me to get a simple, yet daring writing technique down solid, then I usually practice over and over again, trying new things. So there you have it. I use this technique of guitar writing to express myself and explore myself through my mind!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
