Once again, it's that time of the year when Thanksgiving is upon us. Here are some things to be thankful for when asked by your relatives at the dinner table.
1. The Election
Yes, not everyone is exactly pleased with the results of this year's election. However, it helps to step back a bit and be thankful that we have the right to vote. We could be discriminating against certain groups and not allow them to vote. We could also be a dictatorship or a monarchy with barely any rights to choose our leaders, if any. Instead of getting into an argument over politics with your grandma, I recommend just keeping it simple by saying you're at least thankful for your right to vote.
2. Education
This should be a no-brainer for college students. We are paying thousands of dollars for our education. However, not everyone in the world or even our country is fortunate enough to receive and education. This includes college and an adequate kindergarten through 12th grade education, as well.
3. Freedom of Religion
Again, like voting, try to avoid any arguments about religion around the dinner table. However, be thankful for the freedom to choose what to believe, or what not to believe in. Not everyone has the option or freedom to choose their own beliefs.
4. Employment
Even if you're not a fan of your job, you have to admit that your job is better than nothing. When your family asks about what you do to make money, just smile and tell the truth. Chances are most of them have been in your situation before. It builds character and makes you a stronger, smarter human being.
5. Diversity
Now, more than ever, we need to be thankful for diversity. In a nation where it is now seen as okay to be racist, sexist, homophobic, etc, we need to take a stand and prove to the older generations that our generation stands for diversity and equality. Don't be afraid to say or do something if you hear something from one of your relatives at the dinner table.
6. Challenges
Yes, challenges are hard and often bring sticky situations. Challenges also make us smarter, stronger and more resilient people. Challenges also allow us to make the tough decisions that we may be avoiding and to face our fears. The good thing about saying that you're thankful for challenges is that, most likely, no one else will say it, but everyone will know deep down that they really are thankful for challenges.
7. Time
Time is definitely something we take advantage of. Perhaps that's why we're always running out of it or wasting it. While time may seem like a very vague thing to be thankful for, it should not be ignored.
