Holy cow, Thanksgiving is already over. It feels like yesterday it was August and I was mentally preparing myself for move-in day. Now the semester is soon to be over, it’s almost time for Christmas Break, and my first experience as a college student is almost complete. This past week, I have taken the time to reflect on how thankful I am for my family, friends, and God, because without them, I would not be who and where I am today. Now this might be one of those cheesy “Oh, I’m so thankful for _____” posts, but when you are given the chance to observe, cherish, and taste how sweet moments are, how can you not take the time to express your thanks for those who mean the most to you?
First, I would like to share how thankful I am for my family. If you’ve read any of my other blogs, then you would understand that my mom and dad have played a huge part in pushing me, loving me, and showing me what it means to be an overall good person. My dad has shown me what it’s like to have compassion to the least of these, taken me on forever memorable mission trips, and demonstrated what true hard work looks likes. My mom and I have grown closer over the years and I would consider her one of my best friends. She was the one who sat up and endured the horrible 6th grade math homework problems with me, led my Sunday school class for years, and showed me how a godly woman should act. My brother, despite his annoying moments, is always someone I can count on. He never ceases to find a way to make me laugh, make puns, or go a meal without providing the entertainment. My family has been my rock and I am so incredibly thankful for their love, patience, and support.
Second, I would like to thank my friends. Before I became a college student, I worried about whether or not I would find “my people.” Well, the Lord has completely taken care of me and blessed me with friends who love me, push me, and care for me. They are my home away from home. In some sort of way they are my family. I am so thankful for the late night food runs, movie nights, and thought-provoking talks we have with one another.
Lastly, but most importantly, I am thankful for God. The Lord has continuously blown my mind. There was a time where I thought Baylor might not be an option, but He opened doors that would help pay for college. God introduced me to amazing friends, an amazing roommate, amazing experiences, and amazing moments that could only reflect His doing. I am positive that without God, I would not be a student at Baylor University, I would not have met the wonderful people I have in my life today, and I would not be who and where I am today.
I think we sometimes forget that the idea of being “thankful” should not be seasonal. God provides so many opportunities to be thankful in our lives, but it’s up to us to acknowledge those instances and turn around to give thanks for them. Being thankful is a characteristic that represents a giving God. Whether or not we think about it, God is the one who allowed your paths to cross with the people you cherish, who determines your beginning and future and designed each detail perfectly. He is the one who has time to be personal in your life, and each individual's on the planet, and still have time to bring rain to water the grass. Being thankful is a direct illustration with our personal relationship with God. So here’s my question to you: Are you being seasonal with your thankfulness?
