I have always been interested in weather, but I’ve only been doing weather-related jobs for seven years. I started the Monticello Weather Center in 2011 at Monticello High School in Charlottesville, Virginia and stopped in 2015 when I graduated high school. I have been the student advisor for school closings for Albemarle County Public Schools when I was in school. I got into weather because I wanted to give back to my community. My community is special to me and has always supported me because I have special needs like autism.
I am also a volunteer storm spotter for the Sterling Virginia National Weather Service. I have been doing this for one year. Then I created Scottsville Area Breaking Weather that is based in the town of Scottsville. I am the executive director, Jack Maxwell. I am also a new writer to the VCU branch of Odyssey. At Scottsville Area Breaking Weather, we post online about school closings in Albemarle County, Fluvanna, Buckingham, and Nelson County. We will also publish the latest information from the local emergency management agencies and the Virginia Dept. of Emergency Management.
In addition, we report power outages from Dominion Va. Power, Central Virginia Electric Co-Op, and Appalachian Power. We give out weather information like river, tropical weather, severe weather, and winter weather forecasts. We also do outreach with the support of Albemarle Co. OEM and the Charlottesville (UVA) Albemarle Community Emergency Response Team. We also do traffic alerts from the Virginia Dept. of Transportation and the 9-1-1 Call Center. We encourage people to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for updates. Also check out our disaster information website at https://scottsvilleareabreakingweather.wordpress.c.... Don’t forget to start getting prepared for the winter season. We hope that we can come together and make our community weather-aware.
