Check Out This Penn Stater's Trip To The 2017 Rose Bowl

Last Monday I had the privilege of attending the 103rd Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The University of Southern California and Pennsylvania State University went head to head in the granddaddy of all college bowl games. On the morning before the game, people lined the streets of Pasadena to watch the parade featuring over 40 floats. Built months in advance, these floats are brought to California weeks prior to the event and in the last 48 hours leading up to the parade, they are covered with some of the most exotic seeds, flowers, and grasses. Featuring surfing dogs, olympians, and some of the world’s best bands, the parade has been bringing joy to the streets of Pasadena and the television screens of Americans. Following the parade came the oldest bowl game in college football: The Rose Bowl. The first game was played in 1902 originally named the Tournament of Roses and then returned in 1916 renamed Rose Bowl, where it has been played annually ever since. The game is held every year on January 1st unless the 1st falls on a Sunday, where it is then moved to New Year's Day observed, January 2nd. Penn State had been featured in the RoseBowl three times previously to this year, winning once and losing twice. USC had played 33 Rose Bowl games, winning 24 previously to 2017. The winner of the Rose Bowl game 2017 was determined in the last minute of the game when a USC player Leon McQuay III made an interception and Matt Boermeester kicked a 46 yard field goal in the last three seconds, changing the score from 49-49 to 52-49 USC. After the game a USC fan turned to me and said "I would have bet $100 that he would not have made that field goal." This game marked history in the Rose Bowl games as it was the highest scoring Rose Bowl ever with a combined total of 101 points. No matter what the outcome, the excitement and power coming from the players and stands made for an outstanding game for everyone.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
