5 Reasons Why I Love Delightfully Odd People

"I'm afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are." -- 'Alice in Wonderland'

5 Reasons Why I Love Delightfully Odd People

Some people say that others are weird, but that has an unfortunate connotation. Odds are, you have one delightfully odd friend, one who is brave enough to actually pursue being themselves in spite of society. Most people may not get them, but secretly you think they are the best. You don't have to say it. Either they know, or they are too oblivious or busy to care.

Here's to the delightfully odd!

1. The delightfully odd person is the epitome of interest.

In addition to a diverse set of hobbies, such as gaming and superhero ranking, they have very complicated tangents. A delightfully odd person's train of thought loops back over itself, goes straight up into the air and out to space. There it floats past rings of babble, planets of obscure references and the original-thought-belt. Basically, their obsessive personality is unpredictable and always morphing into something else. Awkward silences and boring conversations just don't exist.

2. You could make a book out of their fashion choices.

Normal trends just don't cut it for the delightfully odd person. They will always be wearing cool socks, guaranteed. Fashion is an expression of individuality, and the fierceness of the delightfully odd's individuality is a wonder. Imagine a visual representation of their mind. Expect a monocle and suspenders. Maybe they always have to be wearing one piece of Batman merchandise or showing their Slytherin pride. Take a page from their book and mix it up every now and then.

3. They know how to have a good time.

Part of not being mainstream is coming up with new ways to have fun. Done with watching movies and going to the mall? They'll make a new board game with you, or act out a skit. If you haven't played dress-up recently, you need to, and they will be all for it. They're not afraid to skip or dance or snort when they laugh, and that's great.

4. It's refreshing.

Delightfully odd people are honest. There are no fake smiles. They are themselves with absolutely everyone and that isn't all that common anymore. Having a novel acquaintance can really help you figure things out and make memories. If you could re-write the social norm, what would it look like? They're already on it, and the changes look nice.

5. They find something wonderful in everyone.

Not everyone understands the delightfully odd, but they seem to understand everyone else. Allergic to gossip and naturally friendly, they truly love all kinds of people. Any get together thrown by a delightfully odd person will be exceptionally diverse because of this.

New town, new college, new semester and new classes, maybe it's time for some new friends?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
